Catholic League: McCain Embraces Bigot [John Hagee]
Catholic Online ^ | 2/29/2008 | Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights

Posted on 02/28/2008 4:40:37 PM PST by Alex Murphy

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Catholic League) - Yesterday, Senator John McCain said he was “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.”

The Republican presidential hopeful also called Hagee “the staunchest leader of our Christian evangelical movement,” citing the minister’s pro-Israel stance.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue addressed this today:

“There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church.

For example, he likes calling it ‘The Great Whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘anti-Christ,’ and a ‘false cult system.’ To hear the bigot in his own words, click here. http://youtube.com/watch?v=uViQ0hVV57Q

Note: he isn’t talking about the Buddhists.

“In Hagee’s latest book, Jerusalem Countdown, he calls Hitler a Catholic who murdered Jews while the Catholic Church did nothing. ‘The sell-out of Catholicism to Hitler began not with the people but with the Vatican itself,’ he writes.

“For the record, Hitler persecuted the Catholic Church and was automatically excommunicated in 1931—two years before he assumed power—when he acted as best man at Joseph Goebbel’s Protestant wedding. Hitler even bragged about his separation from the Church.

As for doing nothing about the Holocaust, Sir Martin Gilbert reminds us that Goebbels denounced Pope Pius XII for his 1942 Christmas message criticizing the Nazis (the New York Times lauded the pope for doing so in an editorial for two years in a row).

Much to Hagee’s chagrin, Gilbert also says that Pius XII saved three quarters of the Jews in Rome, and that more Jews were saved proportionately in Catholic countries than Protestant countries. Indeed, Israeli diplomat Pinchas Lapide credited the Catholic Church with saving 860,000 Jews. No religion can match that.

Wow. Talk about rewriting history.

Wow, talk about not understanding what you read.

Hitler was never excommunicated.

Hitler was never excommunicated formally, by name.

(I can't remember the last non-theologian who was.)

He was excommunicated automatically (the technical term is latae sententiae) literally hundreds of times over.

A violent attack on a priest or religious was at the time (and is still today) grounds for latae sententiae excommunication. Hitler's troops, on his orders, shot hundreds of priests in Poland alone.

I didn’t see Dennis Prager address the sexual proclivities or practices of the Jews. Did you leave that part out of your excerpt?...

...so, you’re saying that minus a matching sexual innuendo the similarity of the two statements is completely compromised? Interesting...

Donohue himself lambastes the Jews.

He's always careful to lambaste secular Jews, and gets along well with the Orthodox rabbis in NYC.

Believe it or not, Harvey Weinstein is not Irish. He is someone who has made a lot of money by trashing the Catholic Church.

I guess it depends on one’s definition of reformed, at time’s it seems rather broad. Traditionally Baptists would be reformed? Obviously today not all Baptists are reformed.

Hagee and Donohue deserve each other. I used to think that Hagee was just another harmless nut on Christian TV. That McCain thinks its necessary (or wise) to accept Hagee’s endorsement is troubling.

Hitler was never excommunicated.

Incorrect, "Doctor". In February 1931 the German Bishops excommunicated all Nazis and later directed all Catholics that they could not vote for a Nazi in the 1932 election. Lest you foolishly believe that Hitler considered himself to still be a Catholic I suggest you read "Hitler's Table Talk".

One would think that a person with even a modicum of common sense who has embarrassed themselves as many times as you have with your inaccurate, absurd, idiotic statements about a plethora of topics would wise up and be quiet but you aren't even bright enough to realize that you don't have any common sense.

Although I have several substantive Biblical disagreements with Catholics, I do not suppot Hagee. He is trying to decipher Revelations. And while that may be an interesting exercise, it does not make for sound doctrine. The Bible ought to be preached for what IT says, not for what we want to believe it says.

You wrote:

“Hitler was never excommunicated.”

Hitler was excommunicated TWICE. First - by his own actions, self-excommunication and Second - when ALL NAZIS were excommunicated by the German bishops in the early 1930s.

Hitler was never excommunicated.

That is false. The excommunication was latae sententiae.

A latae sententiae penalty follows automatically, by force of the law itself, when the law is contravened.

You’re twisting his words beyond all recognition. In the quote you linked, he does not “lambaste the Jews.” He very specifically criticizes secular Hollywood Jews, blaming Hollywood’s poisonous product on their LACK of religious morality.
