Catholic League: McCain Embraces Bigot [John Hagee]
Catholic Online ^ | 2/29/2008 | Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights

Posted on 02/28/2008 4:40:37 PM PST by Alex Murphy

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Catholic League) - Yesterday, Senator John McCain said he was “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.”

The Republican presidential hopeful also called Hagee “the staunchest leader of our Christian evangelical movement,” citing the minister’s pro-Israel stance.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue addressed this today:

“There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church.

For example, he likes calling it ‘The Great Whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘anti-Christ,’ and a ‘false cult system.’ To hear the bigot in his own words, click here. http://youtube.com/watch?v=uViQ0hVV57Q

Note: he isn’t talking about the Buddhists.

“In Hagee’s latest book, Jerusalem Countdown, he calls Hitler a Catholic who murdered Jews while the Catholic Church did nothing. ‘The sell-out of Catholicism to Hitler began not with the people but with the Vatican itself,’ he writes.

“For the record, Hitler persecuted the Catholic Church and was automatically excommunicated in 1931—two years before he assumed power—when he acted as best man at Joseph Goebbel’s Protestant wedding. Hitler even bragged about his separation from the Church.

As for doing nothing about the Holocaust, Sir Martin Gilbert reminds us that Goebbels denounced Pope Pius XII for his 1942 Christmas message criticizing the Nazis (the New York Times lauded the pope for doing so in an editorial for two years in a row).

Much to Hagee’s chagrin, Gilbert also says that Pius XII saved three quarters of the Jews in Rome, and that more Jews were saved proportionately in Catholic countries than Protestant countries. Indeed, Israeli diplomat Pinchas Lapide credited the Catholic Church with saving 860,000 Jews. No religion can match that.

It seems that the catholics on this thread do not show the Chesed ( lovingkindness ) of Yah'shua ( Jesus ).

Catholics love the whole Christ; fully God and fully man. Christ who called Peter Satan, who fashioned a whip of cords and kicked over the tables, who called the Pharisees liars, hypocrites and broods of vipers. Who called the pagan woman a dog and cursed the fig tree. We believe in the real Jesus, not merely an ideal Jesus.

Really? Why?

“Anti-Catholicism, the last safe bigotry.”

Oh cry me a river of tears. As if we should feel sorry for an organization that is corrupt to the core and has itself persecuted non-Catholic believers for centuries.

This might work to bring in the bucks at the local parish hall but no thinking person will fall for that nonsense coming from a member of one of the most powerful organizations in the world today.

It's an old American WASP tradition.

Himmler and Goebbels worshipped in a Catholic church with their entire families until their deaths.

I'll assume you have some inside information, then. Which Church did they attend and where was it located?

He denies that Jesus is the Messiah? Then how can he even be considered Christian? (Rather than say, Muslim.)

He (or a publicity minion) put out a clarifying statement afterwards. So much spin you have never seen before. (A quick Google later, here we go.) I think he meant what he said the first time, and it sounded perfectly fine to him and everyone around him.

It's dispensationalism, with it's rigid Church/Israel distinction, driven right over a cliff.

lol. I can only assume you own no history books yourself and have never taken a history course in high school or college that dealt with World War II, fascism or Germany.

It's not too late to start.

No matter what their background, I would wager that it’s safe to say they were never regenerated Christians to begin with.

Well said. We saw the fruits of their spirit.

FWIW, regardless of the depth of our differences with the RCC on what they teach as doctrine or dogma we shouldn't ascribe to it what individuals who were nominally RC's did. I can't believe they condoned any of the atrocities.

“Oh cry me a river?”

Cry yourself a river, genius!

The Church has been around long before you arrived and will be around long after you’re gone!

Let us know when the “gamecocks” learn how to play ball.LMAO

Would this have been a kin to Kennedy and Kerry today? IOW, they claim to be RC's but support abortion and gay marriage.

This might work to bring in the bucks at the local parish...

If that parish were in L.A., its offerings would be going to pay for some of the $600 million that was paid out on one single day by the L.A. Archdiocese as part of its massive priestly sex scandal.

And yet the Vatican is wealthy beyond belief. But it's the poor parishioners who get to foot the bill for the sins of those who call themselves "another Christ."

Dear TradicalRC,

Actually, the Muslims consider Jesus to have been the Messiah, the Word of God, born of the Virgin Mary, conceived by the power of God's Spirit, just not the Divine Son of God.

You beat me to it and phrased it better than I.

I think where you can draw the difference between 1930-40's Germany and past behavior is the RCC no longer had the power of the state behind it. Also, in the past the persecution was perpetrated on Christians who refused to be dominated by Rome. They justified that behavior because of their belief in exclusivity.

In Germany it was persecution of Jews, gypsies, political opponents and deviants. It was not an issue of Christian belief and authority.
