You missed the kicker: “Rowley: ‘To be a pregnant priest will just add a whole other dimension’”

At least this whack job recognizes she is apostate:

“That’s when I decided to go to seminary. I figured I couldn’t be Roman Catholic anymore. “

Newsweek thinks it is being clever, using “Catholic” in a context that people presume means “Roman Catholic,” but since they don’t say “Roman,” they figure they aren’t lying. But they goofed. They referred to “the” Catholic priesthood, which suggests that they refer to the main body of Catholicism, which is Roman Catholic.

That’s OK. The editors probably were going to Hell anyway.

OK, I think I understand this, but I’d like to hear you explain it anyway: How is “Ecumenical Catholicism” different from other unrecognized offshoots of the Church, such as the one Mel & Hutton Gibson belong to?

I wonder what you call her at confession.

I’m no fan of the SSPX, but that church still subscribes to the Traditions and doctrines of Catholicism. Their founder was licitly made a bishop by Rome, and consecrated priests according to canon law. They still uphold canon law, arguing correctly that failing to obey an illicit instruction is not unlawful. (The Pope and I just disagree with their conclusion that it was illicit, but the SSPX is fighting a suppression more akin to the suppression of the Jesuits than to the suppression of the ECC.) At worst, the SSPX is schismatic; this group of whack jobs is flat-out apostate.

Oh come on. She has pretty blue eyes and a nice smile. If she wasn’t a heretic and an apostate she’d be perfectly presentable. Could have combed her hair though. I pray she comes to her senses, which she very well might, as she’s very young, and comes back home to her family.

“(The Pope and I just disagree “

and when anyone disagrees with the Pope, the pope wins.Everytime.
He is the supreme interpeter of canon law.

How is “Ecumenical Catholicism” different from other unrecognized offshoots of the Church, such as the one Mel & Hutton Gibson belong to?

The only obvious differences are:

(1) Little Jessie's group very openly teaches against the deposit of faith, whereas Mel's group may not.

(2) Little Jessie's group clearly does not care whether its ordinations are valid or licit, while Mel's group presumably has taken great care to preserve validity.

(3) Because of these distinctions, little Jessie's group does not even rise to the level of schismatic, but is simply an heretical sect It is theoretically possible for Mel's group to be brought collectively into communion with the Holy See. It is simply not possible for little Jessie's.

No. Not an error. It was purposeful and meant to stir up discord and put the Church on the defensive. I meant what I said... inflammatory.

According to its own website the ‘Ecumenical Catholic Community’ has about 20 parishes in 11 states, most of them in California and Colorado. They claim to be part of the ‘Old Catholic’ community which became schismatic at the time of the First Vatican Council, on the issue of Papal Infallibility. This group is obviously fully heretical at this point, and seems to have some of the aspects of a scam, getting religious tax exemptions. (This last part is my suspicion, based on the website.)

Let me explain. If you are 25 years old and a priest, that means you were 18 and started college and finished when you were 22. You then went directly to seminary and spent the next three years or so in Seminary. No life experience.

Yeah, I'm sure there are some good priests who are young, and some bad ones who are old. But the best priests are those who are seasoned.

And yeah, someone who spent the entirety of 18 to 25 in either college or a seminary here in the US is pretty much a punk kid.

That is no Catholic priest.

She may be a minister, but she did not become a Catholic priest, no matter what Newsweek wants to call her.

Doing more digging, I am going to guess that this group has significantly less than 1,000 people who attend their services weekly.

When was the last time Newsweek gave a glowing profile - basically an advertisement - to such a tiny sect?

It does seem - like many "Old Catholic" offshoots in the US - to be run mostly as a tax dodge.

I’m no fan of the SSPX, but that church still subscribes to the Traditions and doctrines of Catholicism.

In addition, I believe that Benedict XVI is actively wotking to end the schism with the SSPX. My impression is he hopes to work to end this before he gets to the far more difficult problem of restoring communion with the Orthodox (not something anyone thinks will be accomplished during his papacy).

And if Newsweek is going to do stories on fringe religions, why not do it on one that is interesting, rather than simply inflammatory? I bought a Hillary Clinton voodoo doll the last time I was down in New Orleans, and I have been saving it for the right moment. It would be useful to know ahead of time whether the thing is actually going to work during the first presidential debate.

The writer is an outright liar. This woman DID NOT become a Roman Catholic Priest, because her seminary is not approved by the Roman Catholic Church.

I would put them two schisms beyond “Old Catholic”...maybe three.

I read up on “Old Catholics” when all that Milingo business was going on. There are a plethora of lines that claim to be “Old Catholic”...most are wacky quacky liberals, a couple are a bit more High Church.
