VATICAN CITY (AFP) - The Vatican set itself on a collision course with other Christian faiths Tuesday, reaffirming the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church in a corrective document designed to clear up recent "erroneous" doctrine.
The document's central claim that the Catholic Church is "the one true Church of Christ", is likely to revive a debate which has dogged the Vatican's dealings with other Christian faiths for decades.
Other Christian faiths "lack elements considered essential to the Catholic Church," it said.
The 16-page text -- released by the Vatican's doctrinal watchdog the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and ratified by the pope -- "constitutes a clear reaffirmation of Catholic doctrine on the Church," according to an attached commentary.
Basically a restatement of bedrock Vatican doctrine, its release was prompted "because some contemporary theological research has been erroneous or ambiguous," the commentary said.
**Other Christian faiths “lack elements considered essential to the Catholic Church,” it said. **
Namely the sacraments and a lot of other things. I am sure they are listed in the document.
All the churches at that time were Catholic — founded by Christ through the apostles.
Thank you so much!
I know (and God knows) that I need some major help with my shortcomings!!!!
(pitifully there are lots of them!)
Are Protestants part of "the army of Satan?"
My bad. Here I thought I was doing well with remembering everything. =)
Aquinasfan - How did you come to find out that Christ is your Savior? IOW, how was what you know today about Christ passed on to you?
My father was the first to tell me about it.
And the woman behind me changes the word "Father" to "Creator." I wonder what the Creed would look like (We believe...) if we all deleted portions that we didn't like? Maybe something like the Protestant churches.
I guess that way meant as a snipe, but every denomination does something like that.
Cap'n Crunch - Ah, a Protestant eh? :-)
Well, I call myself non-denominational, what I want is a truley united Christian body, because we will need it, and soon. Is one who isn't Catholic necessarily a Protestant?
cammie - Its actually a lower-case c catholic in the creed. Not Catholic as in Roman Catholic, but catholic as in universal. Of course when the creed was written, all Chrisatians were Catholic...
No arguements from me.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to answer everyone =)
Peter alone or Peter and his successors? You cannot have it both ways. If you are going to argue from the Scripture you need to actually pay attention to the Scripture says.
If you argue Peter and his successors, then you are in trouble, biblically speaking, since that error cannot be supported. You are back to your tradition as the supreme judge of all theology.
From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." -- Hebrews 10:12-14"But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

Yikes! NO!
I think that the graphic was meant for Catholics, because this is what we do. If it had been for Non-Catholic Christians, it would have said to wrap yourself in the Word of God or bathe yourself in the Power of the Holy Spirit.
At least that’s what I saw.
This document is not designed to convince Protestants that they are wrong. The Church does not expect you to read this and say, “Eureka!” It’s a re-iteration to Catholics of what has always been held to be Truth by the Magisterium. If it’s efficacious to the non-Catholic, wonderful. But it’s really not necessary to try and convince us we’re wrong.
We may differ in our approach, but our Love of the Lord is great, my FRiend.
My daughter once asked if they have Popsicles in Heaven. If they do, remind me to buy you one!
What we see in Mt. 16 is the new Davidic King bestowing the office of vice-regent. When an office-holder dies, the office does not die with him, but rather is bestowed upon someone else. Giving the keys to “Peter alone” is in the sense that the keys (and thus the office) belong to one man at any given time.

Not even.
Deal. Although they’ll probably be free. Sky blue, hopefully. And root beer. 8~)
As I said on the other thread, now if they’d just condemn evolution and the higher criticism!
Yes
If I didn’t believe, and try to do, everything that the Catholic Church teaches, I wouldn’t bother going to Mass.
And I guess it’s the same with any organization that one might be involved with. For instance, my time in the Marine Corps. I can imagine the beating I would recieve if I told my Drill Instructor that I was not going to recite the 5th General Order because I ‘didn’t believe in it.’
Until we close the cafeteria we will continue to have the problems we have.
Yum! Blue are my fav!
(you’re right, they be free but I’ll do the leg work)
Historical revisionism is not just a monopoly of the Soviets.
Such an authoritarian Rome centered hierarchy did not exist the first few centuries.
Christ rent the curtain protecting the Most Holy of Holies from the troops.
Can’t imagine He was interested in setting a new one up.
Not at all. Anyone baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is a member of the catholic body of Christ, but like the Prodigal Son, the Church teaches that Protestant Christians should return home to the feast awaiting them in the Catholic faith. And like the father, we eagerly await your return!
It takes a pretty long time to get to the scene of the disasters in those horse and buggy outfits too.
