Right, it was more decentralized. If you want an eye-opener, go to Biblegateway.com and do keyword search in the New Testament on the word "church".

What's interesting is how the word is used in the singular and plural.

Here's the search.

Lots of churches (local expressions of the Universal Church), with Christ as the head.
