“Behold a Host, Arrayed in White”
by Hans A. Brorson, 1694-1764
1. Behold a host, arrayed in white,
Like thousand snow-clad mountains bright,
With palms they stand. Who is this band
Before the throne of light?
Lo, these are they of glorious fame
Who from the great affliction came
And in the flood of Jesus’ blood
Are cleansed from guilt and blame.
Now gathered in the holy place,
Their voices they in worship raise,
Their anthems swell where God doth dwell,
Mid angels’ songs of praise.
2. Despised and scorned, they sojourned here;
But now, how glorious they must appear!
Those martyrs stand a priestly band,
God’s throne forever near.
So oft, in troubled days gone by,
In anguish they would weep and sigh,
At home above the God of Love
For aye their tears shall dry.
They now enjoy their Sabbath rest,
The paschal banquet of the blest;
The Lamb, their Lord, at festal board
Himself is Host and Guest.
3. Then hail, ye mighty legions, yea,
All hail! Now safe and blest for aye,
And praise the Lord, who with His Word
Sustained you on the way.
Ye did the joys of earth disdain,
Ye toiled and sowed in tears and pain.
Farewell, now bring your sheaves and sing
Salvation’s glad refrain.
Swing high your palms, lift up your song,
Yea, make it myriad voices strong,
Eternally shall praise to Thee,
God, and the Lamb belong.

Orthodox Ping?
I think, St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Smyrna, has the honor of punching Arius, while St. Athanaius has the authorship of the Creed.
Orthodox ping
Thanks for posting, I’ve always wondered about that passage from the Catechism! This helps clarify it.
Ping to fully read later
Ping to watch the Mormons show up for this one....
The vast difference between "becoming God" (Christian theosis) and "becoming a god" (that other religion) is entirely lost on some folks.
Ol’ St. Nick must have had quite a temper. I read that the reason we talk about a bundle of sticks and a lump of coal and coming down the chimney was that parents would tell their children that if they weren’t good, St. Nick would come down the chimney and beat them with a switch and they’d only get one lump of coal to heat their bedroom.
Ask, and you shall receive . . . .
I would like to know your thoughts about this article. (Do you all observe an Athanasius day?)
It's(they're?) God's wrath on our lousy teaching. E.G. Jehovah's Witnesses arose because we weren't doing a good job on Eschatology and the "personal" (for want of a better word) nature of God. So here comes a group which has two things to say: "God has a name, and the end is coming."
We do a bad job on the sanctity of the family and on theosis, and we get Mormons.
Sorta like that.
To me it shows that we really are built for God, and if we don't get the real deal we grope around for something kinda like Him and his Truth. While not in any way wanting to minimize the awfulness of lousy ecclesiology and so forth, and while also conceding eagerly that Protestant group (B) usually arises in response to the deficiencies of Protestant group (A), we also need to consider that our deficiencies in teaching and living help provide fertilizer for these noxious weeds -- and their nature and qualities can help us diagnose our errors.
At least, it's a conjecture of mine.
1 John 3: 2 Beloved, we are God's children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
7 If you had known me, you would without doubt have known my Father also: and from henceforth you shall know him. And you have seen him....
12 ...Amen, amen, I say to you, he that believeth in me, the works that I do, he also shall do: and greater than these shall he do.
(John 14)
