The biggest shocker: This article is from the Village Voice! Amazing!

They actually allowed a writer to end a piece with "Rather than mocking virgins or assuming everyone you know has popped their cherry, realize that your virginal best friend or co-worker may be waiting not just for sex, but acceptance."

And who is this Jason Illian?

God is good!!!!

"Being hostile to virginity is the ultimate misogyny. It means sneering at the innocence of children, and laughing at women who want sex to mean something more than just a hookup...Right now we seem to be going for a single low standard—let's all imitate the most adolescent male, and make him our ideal."

Excellent point.

Rather than mocking virgins or assuming everyone you know has popped their cherry ...

Perhaps easing up on vulgarity would also be something to strive for.

Gender roles are so ingrained that men like Roger don't feel manly if they haven't had sex

PFFFT! Lotharos are the LEAST manly, LEAST masculine of them all. They are constantly obsessing about hair/clothes/appearance. They go to the gym and stare at themselves. They become *slaves* to the sexual urge and that makes them weak and puny, to the point when they *cut and run* like scared little girls at the very sight of any kind of lasting, meaninngful relationship with a woman.

Is Hugh Hefner a man? He is SOO damn effeminate. What the hell kind of man walks around in a bathrobe???

The MANLIEST men are those who are either a) married with children and with a hard-working job, or those men who b) are entirely chaste and seem strangely aloof from women (e.g. Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns, Natty Bumppo in Last of the Mohicans).

And in either case, note and note well that they are manly precisely BECAUSE the sexual urge DOES NOT control them!

I was surprised that the Forty Year Old Virgin was as good of a movie as it was. While it employed every male virgin joke in the book, it ultimately had a positive message about it.

Excellent post!

It's a relief to read that despite our culture, there are people in my generation (I'm 20) who still believe in virginity...

The relative consequences of sex versus virginity depends on one's age.

Certainly, an unplanned pregnancy is much more traumatic at age fifteen than at age twenty-five.

And of course, pregnancy is almost impossible at fifty-five.

What about STD’s? Certainly STD’s would be very traumatic to a teenager with a life expectancy of decades.

But an octogenarian is not likely to have a long life expectancy in any case.

Now let us examine the other side, which is virginity.

Virginity is not disturbing at thirteen, since almost everyone that age is a virgin.

But what about age thirty? Imagine someone knowing that everyone else that he knows, including his own family, has had sex and he had not. How would he feel? What would be the only rational way for him to feel? And what would his peers think of it? Note again that the value of the opinions of one’s peers increase with age. At thirteen, one’s peers are dumbass kids. At thirty, one’s peers would include people who are married and have kids and can support themselves.
