The biggest shocker: This article is from the Village Voice! Amazing!

They actually allowed a writer to end a piece with "Rather than mocking virgins or assuming everyone you know has popped their cherry, realize that your virginal best friend or co-worker may be waiting not just for sex, but acceptance."

And who is this Jason Illian?

God is good!!!!

"Being hostile to virginity is the ultimate misogyny. It means sneering at the innocence of children, and laughing at women who want sex to mean something more than just a hookup...Right now we seem to be going for a single low standard—let's all imitate the most adolescent male, and make him our ideal."

Excellent point.

Rather than mocking virgins or assuming everyone you know has popped their cherry ...

Perhaps easing up on vulgarity would also be something to strive for.

Gender roles are so ingrained that men like Roger don't feel manly if they haven't had sex

PFFFT! Lotharos are the LEAST manly, LEAST masculine of them all. They are constantly obsessing about hair/clothes/appearance. They go to the gym and stare at themselves. They become *slaves* to the sexual urge and that makes them weak and puny, to the point when they *cut and run* like scared little girls at the very sight of any kind of lasting, meaninngful relationship with a woman.

Is Hugh Hefner a man? He is SOO damn effeminate. What the hell kind of man walks around in a bathrobe???

The MANLIEST men are those who are either a) married with children and with a hard-working job, or those men who b) are entirely chaste and seem strangely aloof from women (e.g. Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns, Natty Bumppo in Last of the Mohicans).

And in either case, note and note well that they are manly precisely BECAUSE the sexual urge DOES NOT control them!

"What the hell kind of man walks around in a bathrobe???"

I don't own a bathrobe. The trip from the bathroom is too short to deserve a change in clothes.

Maybe double H isn't really a man at all. Maybe he is Margaret Sanger in drag.

LOL...I was perhaps intemperate...I own and use a bathrobe, I just don't make it the centerpiece of my wardrobe/lifestyle! :)

I think you may have something on the Sanger/Hefner connection. Hmmmm....

Now that it comes up, I wonder if Margaret Sanger was actually a man. By the way the modestyzone site looks great. I sent it to my daughter. Thanks.

You know, one of the unwelcome eye-openers I've had in the last few years, is seeing the degree of sexual vulgarity (alternating between drool and she-a-ho-cynicism) right here in this supposedly conservative FreeRepublic.

A one time I thought politically conservative neighborhoods would be free of posters who are maturity-arrested and morally retarded; but noo-o-o

I'm not talking about a little light-hearted woo-woo ribaldry; I'm talking about the sheer contempt for that which is dear and wholesome and pure and deep-down good.

I said to my husband once, "It's so hard to raise kids to be Christian---" and he added with a sad shake of his head, "It's getting hard to raise kids to be human."

I'm with you on this. I found the wording of this to be rather tasteless.

I said to my husband once, "It's so hard to raise kids to be Christian---" and he added with a sad shake of his head, "It's getting hard to raise kids to be human."

My wife teaches math at a local high school. Since she is low on the totem pole, she gets the lower grade of students. Many have already had a kid or two by the time she sees them.

As part of her curriculum, she has the kids write down on note cards little answers to questions that asks during class. Last week, the question is if you could go back into time, what would you do?

Many answered "Keep my parents from breaking up", many more said "Not make the same mistakes that I did".

It broke her heart. We have another generation of kids growing with broken homes and spirits, having babies so they can be loved by someone.

The fact that it is considered scandalous to be in your 30's and a virgin is evidence of that. Sadly, I also fell to this temptation, and wish I hadn't. God willing, the culture seems to be changing. Hopefully it is not to late for our country.

The level here has gone downhill in the last coupla' years, which is why I rarely post. It's always been there to an extent, but now it's nearly everywhere. Too bad no one will point the usual suspects to your post.

I understand being bummed at the use of vulgarity and depravity ...

But, remember the original article was in The Village Voice. The Village Voice is a deep NY nightlife, very hip weekly paper. What is amazing is that The Village Voice published this article. They are allowing someone to talk openly about the huge pressure to have casual sex and the okayness of being a virgin.

That is amazing! This is deepest, darkest territory and there is a little light. This is the Village Voice and yet somewhere in there these people understand why people might choose virginity. There is hope in this. There is Christ's love sitting in the midst of the hippest and youngest of partyers in NY.

I'm with you there. And I'm pleasantly surprised that the Usual FReeper Suspects haven't shown up (yet) with expert horndog advice on speedy de-virgination...
