An introduction to Hebrew, the `Alef-Beit, and Gemmatria
Self | 5/15/2006 | Zionist Conspirator

The Book of Genesis begins: Berei'shit bara' 'Eloqim 'et-HaShamayim ve'et-Ha'Aretz. This is conventionally translated "In the beginning G-d created the Heavens and the Earth." However, one word cannot be translated into English. This is the word 'et, which in Hebrew is the sign of the definite direct object (though its use is not consistent in the Bible). Grammatically its use here simply means that "he Heavens" and "the Earth" are definite direct objects of the verb bara' (He created). But since the Torah is a wholly Divine text, written by G-d and dictated to Moses letter-for-letter, there is so much more indicated by the letters and words.

Read another way, the opening of Genesis could be read "In the beginning G-d created 'et." In this context 'et was the first thing G-d created. What then is 'et?

'Et is a two-letter word, made up of the first and last letters ('alef and tav) of the Hebrew alphabet (the 'alef-beit). This implies that the first thing G-d actually created was the 'alef-beit itself, and then used these letters to speak the universe into existence. For this reason it is evident that the Hebrew language is not just another language, but the language of G-d Himself from whose very letters the world was created. 'Adam HaRi'shon (the first man) was given the power of speech by G-d at his creation, and Adam spoke Hebrew. Unlike all other languages (ultimately derived from it), Hebrew corresponds objectively to the very essence of reality. When Adam named the animals, the Hebrew names he gave them corresponded exactly to their true essences. The idea that Hebrew developed from any earlier language or that the 'alef-beit originated with the Phoenicians and was later borrowed by the ancient Israelites is rejected.

It should be observed at this point that other than those who have deviated into outright heresy, all Orthodox Jews believe these things, including the "Theistic evolutionists" among them (once again raising the question of why someone who listens to secular science with regard to the opening verses of the Torah would then inconsistently cease to do so for dogmatic reasons with regard to all other matters).

In addition to their phonetic values, the Hebrew letters also have numeric values. The letters 'alef to tet represents the units, yod to tzaddei the tens, and qof through tav the numbers one hundred through four hundred. It follows then that every word, every verse, and each book in the Torah can be interpreted as a number. In fact, the Torah itself is a gigantic number!

Once the numeric values of the Hebrew letters are understood, a whole new world of Biblical interpretation is opened. The name "Noach" ("Noah") is made up of two letters (nun and cheit) which total the number 58. The life of Noah intersected with that of Abraham by 58 years, for Noah died when Abraham was 58 years old (in the year 2006 from Creation). The name of Noah's son Shem consists of two letters (shin and mem) which add up to the number 340. There were precisely 340 years between the year of the Flood (1656) and that of the dispersal of mankind at Migdal Bavel (1996). Shem lived through both events, as did his father Noah.

But names are not the only Hebrews words whose numeric values are full of meaning. The word for year, shanah, adds up to the number 355, the precise number of days in a full common (non-leap) year. The masculine word for "one" ('echad) adds up to thirteen (in fact, the feminine form, achat, adds up to 409, whose digits add up, again, to thirteen). Twice thirteen is 26. The prophet Zekharyahu (Zechariah) prophesied that bayom hahu' yihyeh HaShem 'echad ushemo 'echad. The word 'echad (one) is used twice, adding up to 26. "26" just happens to be the numeric value of the Tetragrammaton, the Divine Name. By using the word 'echad twice the Prophet is stressing the fact that the day will come when HaShem will be known by his proper name and not any euphemisms! And incidentally, the Torah was given to Israel in the 26th generation of the world (ten generations from Adam to Noah, ten generations from Noah to Abraham, and six generations from Abraham to Moses)!!!

It may be truly said that the Bible cannot be translated, because every single word and letter (including their numeric values, their sizes and shapes, the "crowns" on them in the traditional sacred calligraphy, and even their names) are full of meaning. Translations of the Bible are merely translations of the Bible. The Bible is written in Hebrew (with a few passages in Aramaic)! How ironic that Fundamentalist Protestantism, which most insists on the inerrancy of the original text, has inherited from its battles with the Catholic Vulgate a belief in the sufficiency of vernacular translations!

Before closing, a couple more points. As mentioned above, even the names of the Hebrew letters ('alef=ox, beit=house, etc.) and shapes of the letters of the 'alef-beit are full of meaning. Similarly (and this is a great mystery), we are told that in Heaven the order of the letters is precisely the opposite of their order on earth (ie, in Heaven the letters go from tav to 'alef rather than from 'alef to tav). Sometimes ths backwards order of the letters (called 'ATBa"SH) is used in the Bible to give a "coded" reference to something, ie, "Sheshakh" = "Babel."

I hope all who love and fear the Biblical G-d will study the Holy Tongue and access the Bible in its true and untranslatable form.

Don't you mean 365?

No, ZC is correct. The Hebrew month is a lunar month, based on the phases of the moon. A lunar year is shorter than a solar year.

Every few years a "leap month" is inserted into the calendar in order to keep the holidays in their proper seasons, for example, Passover must always be celebrated in the spring.

The Muslim calendar is based on the lunar month, but with no calculations to keep it in synch with the solar year, so Ramadan slides all over the seasons.

La"G Ba`Omer is the Jewish "m-y day." There are bonfires at night, picnics during the day, and Sefaradi kids play with toy bows and arrows (supposedly connected with the Bar Kokhba' rebellion). All those who love and fear the True G-d should relinquish the holidays of the nations of the world and observe the Jewish holidays instead.

How many people know that T"U Be'Av is the Jewish "valentine's day?" But it's not until summer!

I just realized that in writing all these "coincidences" with regard to numeric values in the Hebrew alphabet--specifically the fact that the word `echad (one) adds up to thirteen--that I neglected to mention that thirteen is the number of middot (literally "measures," conventionally "attributes") of mercy possessed by HaShem, as well as the total number of tribes of Israel (counting both tribes of Joseph and Levi). Both HaShem and Israel are "one," and both are made up of thirteen (attributes of HaShem, tribes of Israel). Also, RaMBa"M formulated thirteen fundamental principals of the Jewish faith.

My apologies for not remembering to put these things in my initial post!

You wrote it. Why should it embarrass me?

I was never confused by the word et. But if you search hard enough here on FR, you will see that you are not the first one to post this silly idea that there is something special about the fact that this word is composed of the first and last letters of the alphabet; and that I have commented on this before.

But names are not the only Hebrews words whose numeric values are full of meaning. The word for year, shanah, adds up to the number 355, the precise number of days in a full common (non-leap) year.

The head of the year - Adam’s "birthday"- is allocated to four days of the week (corresponding to the first four prime numbers: 2,3,5,7)

Rosh Hashanah postponement rules
Day of week Number of days
Monday 353 355 383 385
Tuesday 354 384
Thursday 354 355 383 385
Saturday 353 355 383 385

By applying the postponements to the moladot Tishrei at the beginning and end of any Hebrew year, a table of four gates (Hebrew: arba’ah sha’arim), which is also a table of limits, can be developed which uniquely identifies which of the fourteen types the year is (the day of the week of 1 Tishrei, the number of days in Cheshvan and Kislev, and whether common or leap (embolismic)).[1][2][3][4] “Four gates” refers to the four allowable days of the week with which the year can begin. The first table of four gates was developed by Saadiah Gaon (892–942).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_calendar

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Computer_Programming/Hebrew_calendar

The four gates are four days (day 2,3,5,7) and therefore are also four “heads” (being the head/first of the years), and from hence the civil calendar “flows” (along with the beginning of the rainy season).

8. And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed:

9. And out of the ground (adamah) made the Lord God every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil:

10. And a river went out from Eden to water the garden; and from there it was divided, and became four rivers: (lit. heads).

Is this river symbolic of the yearly calendar? At its head, Rosh Hashanah, it is allocated into four heads. It waters/nourishes/refreshes the land continually with its returning (cyclical*) ordinances and feasts and remembrance days.

* hashanah = 360 = a complete circle

The four possible heads are

Monday (day 2)
Tuesday (day 3)
Thursday (day 5)
Saturday (day 7)

abbreviated as

יום ב'
יום ג'
יום ה'
יום ש'

(Sorry, I can't seem to get the coding/display right for the last one.)

Looks like a diaspora dreidel נ ג ה ש

But instead of a nun/nes it's a bet... bayit. ב ג ה ש

Do the four heads thus revolve and say, "bayit gadol haya sham"?

A great house was there?

Where?

And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed

the tree of life also in the midst of the garden

And a river went out from Eden to water the garden...

This stuff never ends, does it. :)

See post 13. (2010)

Rosh Hashanah:

"A great house was there", on Adam's birthday.

There he put the man whom he had formed... the tree of life also in the midst of the garden

A great house (family line):

Adam - David - Moshiach

1 Sam 7

11. From the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies; Also the Lord tells you that he will make you a house:
12. And when your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall issue from your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom:
13. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever:

The covenant of salt, the ionic (ion = 66 = ben David) bonds dispersed (dissolved, hidden) in the waters of the nations (e.g. Javan, same as ion)

salt (malach) and bread (lechem) - same letters - 78 x 2 = 156 =

Tzion, Joseph, Ezekiel, king of Javan (ion), from the sheepfold (2 Sam 7:8 re David receiving the above promise), "and they shall become one in your hand" (Eze 37.17), who is this coming from Edom (Isa 63:1)

66 = "and they shall be one in my hand" (Eze 37:19)

I obviously hit 'post' too soon.

Going over to the Hebrew Wikipedia page for sodium chloride, I see that the title is "cooking salt":

מלח בישול

= 426

You can't make this stuff up. Better throw that in with the House of David and the rest of that list.
