Is America really FREE?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am asking this to find out how many people actually consider America free. I know that is a very controversial subject but this could be very interesting.

I am desparate. I frequent this forum for artists and someone posed this question for a debate. I opened up my big conservative mouth and the leftist piranha were all over me like a hobo on a ham-and-cheese. You would have to join their forum to post anything and you should be of a creative bent. BTW, I am AquinasShrugged.

"Is America really FREE?"

I'm going with a No, but...it's pretty sweet for a Police State.

If blogs and talk radio aren't exempted from McCain-Feingold, I'd say we'd crossed the line over to "not-free," and I'll start quoting Jefferson's admonition all over the place.

Do you mean the CD's by the singing group America?

"Well I rode through the desert on a horse with no name",.....

Or do you mean the United States of America?

But then, who is really truly free in a world such as ours?

And in the vast cosmos that is our home, what does freedom really mean with death lurking around every corner and random astroid?

And do you really WANT to be free with all it's attendant responsibilities and obligations? Wouldn't you rather live in a nice, structured socialist country with a little security and "free" "health care".

Freedom, as they say,... is not free. Or easy. Freedom is one of the toughtest and hardest jobs in the world to attain and maintain. It's too tough a job for many, many people.

It's just easier to surrender to the appeal of a big brother who will take care of you.

Considering that medieval serfs had to pay 33% taxes to their lords and they were considered slaves - property - no, we are not free.

No. You miss paying property taxes and see what happens to you.

Depends on what you wanna do. You want to worship anyone or anything? Fine. You want to protest? You are free to do it. You want to rape the 12 year old babysitter while smoking a bong? You are probably not going to think this country is "free."

Yes.

However the upkeep and constant renovations are killing us

I HATE that song worse than Dave Barry does.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I've been a professional musician, pianist and composer, for over 35 years. I used to participate a lot in an artists forum in Baltimore. I got so disgusted at all the hate that was vented towards me whenever I shared my "white, straight-guy" opinions, that not only do I now not even bother to participate in this forum, I've switched political parties as well.

Increasingly, no. When a third of your paycheck is disappearing, when you never truly own your own home (re: property tax remark that someone earlier noted), when preventative laws can ruin your life (DUI), no, you're not free.

I'm betting you don't like "Drove My Chevy To the Levee" a whole lot either. Who was that, Don McClean, "American Pie"?

I should know, but I was in the desert and I can't remember my name, fortunately there ain't no shame in that.

No. We haven't been since the Great Society which was started by the citizens being stupid enough to enslave future citizens by allowing a income tax.

You can add CFR and the 16th/17th amendments to that list.

What got my interest was the wet canvas web site as I have it in my book marks and often go there to see what is happening in the art world. I didn't know they had a political section.

What I read over there was that every one immediatly goes off into abstract ideas on what freedom is and how we are loosing or not loosing it.

There have been a lot of losses of various "freedoms" over the years. We can't smoke opium. Kids can't drink alcohol. I can't rob or kill with impunity, Prostitution is illegal. I can't shoot my semi-auto down the main street of town.I can't have a slave, or sell myself as a slave for that matter.
When you look freedom or LIBERTY (a better word), YES! we do still have liberty! Yes, we have had to give up some of it for living in peace with others and we must guard that liberty we have from those who desire power over us.

We still have representation in Government which is the core of it all and we have the authority to OVERTHROW our government every election day.

In that the Bill of Rights is almost over thrown, no.

I am ashamed that the CFR was passed under a Republican House, Senate, and White House.

We don't really own anything, and if you say the wrong thing you will face jail time. We can't even say who we are really fighting in the war on Terror.

The big question is what should we do now?
