Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I
Dt 18:15-20
Moses spoke to all the people, saying:
A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you
from among your own kin;
to him you shall listen.
This is exactly what you requested of the LORD, your God, at Horeb
on the day of the assembly, when you said,
Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God,
nor see this great fire any more, lest we die.
And the LORD said to me, This was well said.
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin,
and will put my words into his mouth;
he shall tell them all that I command him.
Whoever will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name,
I myself will make him answer for it.
But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name
an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak,
or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9
R. (8) If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;
let us acclaim the rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as in the day of Massah in the desert,
Where your fathers tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Reading II
1 Cor 7:32-35
Brothers and sisters:
I should like you to be free of anxieties.
An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord,
how he may please the Lord.
But a married man is anxious about the things of the world,
how he may please his wife, and he is divided.
An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord,
so that she may be holy in both body and spirit.
A married woman, on the other hand,
is anxious about the things of the world,
how she may please her husband.
I am telling you this for your own benefit,
not to impose a restraint upon you,
but for the sake of propriety
and adherence to the Lord without distraction.
Gospel
Mk 1:21-28
Then they came to Capernaum,
and on the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught.
The people were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
he cried out, What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are the Holy One of God!
Jesus rebuked him and said,
Quiet! Come out of him!
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another,
What is this?
A new teaching with authority.
He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.
His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.
Faith-sharing bump.
Bible bump.

Sunday, January 29, 2006 Meditation Mark 1:21-28 In a sense, todays gospel reading gives us a microcosm of all the stories about Jesus public ministry in the gospels. Mark tells us that just before this demoniac entered the synagogue, the Jews were astounded by Jesus preaching. They could sense that Jesus spoke with the authority of God, while the scribes relied on the authority of education and tradition. Obviously, Jesus wants us to be educated. And of course he places a great value upon our traditions. But at the same time, when Gods power and his authority are present, we can tell the difference. We feel the peace, the hope, and the love. When the Holy Spirit is at work, our faith increases, and we respond to it. The Jews were not the only ones who saw a difference in Jesus. And the demon saw it as well. He was so upset by Jesus presence, in fact, that he blurted out: I know who you are, the Holy One of God (Mark 1:24). The difference between the peoples response and the demons response, however, is significant. Being astounded by Jesus is not necessarily the same as knowing that he is the Holy One of God. Its even possible that some of those who were amazed by Jesus were the same people who eventually turned against him. So ask yourself today: Am I relying only on the good authority that is embodied in education, good reason, and longstanding traditions? Or am I allowing myself to be taught by the Holy Spirit as wellby the One who brings the authority of God to life in my heart and mind? The people in Jesus time knew the difference, and so can we. If you want to know that difference, turn to the Lord today at Mass and ask him for more of his Spirit. Every morning when you wake up, tell the Lord: You are the Holy One of God. What do you want to do in my life today? Then watch what happens. Lord, you constantly protect your church from the hand of evil. Teach us with your authority. Work in our lives and enliven us with your heavenly grace. Deuteronomy 18:15-20; Psalm 95:1-2,6-9; 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 |

|
O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.
This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited. |
A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.
Psalm 90 (91) |

The protection of the Most High |
He will shade you with his wings; you will not fear the terror of the night. Alleluia. |
He who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells under the shade of the Almighty. He will say to the Lord: You are my shelter and my strength, my God, in whom I trust. For he will free you from the hunters snare, from the voice of the slanderer. He will shade you with his wings, you will hide underneath his wings. His faithfulness will be your armour and your shield. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; nor the plague that walks in the shadows, nor the death that lays waste at noon. A thousand will fall at your side, at your right hand ten thousand will fall, but you it will never come near. You will look with your eyes and see the reward of sinners. For the Lord is your shelter and refuge; you have made the Most High your dwelling-place. Evil will not reach you, harm cannot approach your tent; for he has set his angels to guard you and keep you safe in all your ways. They will carry you in their arms in case you hurt your foot on a stone. You walk on the viper and cobra, you will tread on the lion and the serpent. Because he clung to me, I shall free him: I shall lift him up because he knows my name. He will call upon me and for my part, I will hear him: I am with him in his time of trouble. I shall rescue him and lead him to glory. I shall fill him with length of days and show him my salvation. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
He will shade you with his wings; you will not fear the terror of the night. Alleluia. |

They will see the face of the Lord, and his name will be marked on their foreheads. There will be no more night: they will not need sunlight or lamp-light, because the Lord God himself will shine upon them. And they will reign for ever and ever. |
Short Responsory | ? |
---|---|
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. - Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness. - Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. - Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. |
Canticle | Nunc Dimittis |
---|---|
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia. | |
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace. You have fulfilled your promise. My own eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples. A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness; the glory of your people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
|
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia. |
Prayer | |
---|---|
Let us pray. Today we have celebrated the mystery of the Christs resurrection, and so now we humbly ask you, Lord, that we may rest in your peace, far from all harm, and rise rejoicing and giving praise to you. Through Christ our Lord, Amen. |
May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. |

Authority over Demons |
|
01/30/06 |
Ive read many term papers in my day. Most of them are no more than a patchwork of quotes. Thats because college students are smart enough to know that they really cant say much on their own authority: to make their case, they have to lean on the authority of others more learned than themselves. |
Talk about perfct timing.
I ned to copy and paste this to a freind this morning.
