Psalm: Tuesday 6

Reading I
1 Sm 16:1-13

The LORD said to Samuel:
“How long will you grieve for Saul,
whom I have rejected as king of Israel?
Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way.
I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem,
for I have chosen my king from among his sons.”
But Samuel replied:
“How can I go?
Saul will hear of it and kill me.”
To this the LORD answered:
“Take a heifer along and say,
‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I myself will tell you what to do;
you are to anoint for me the one I point out to you.”

Samuel did as the LORD had commanded him.
When he entered Bethlehem,
the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and inquired,
“Is your visit peaceful, O seer?”
He replied:
“Yes! I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.
So cleanse yourselves and join me today for the banquet.”
He also had Jesse and his sons cleanse themselves
and invited them to the sacrifice.
As they came, he looked at Eliab and thought,
“Surely the LORD’s anointed is here before him.”
But the LORD said to Samuel:
“Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature,
because I have rejected him.
Not as man sees does God see,
because he sees the appearance
but the LORD looks into the heart.”
Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him before Samuel,
who said, “The LORD has not chosen him.”
Next Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said,
“The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel,
but Samuel said to Jesse,
“The LORD has not chosen any one of these.”
Then Samuel asked Jesse,
“Are these all the sons you have?”
Jesse replied,
“There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said to Jesse,
“Send for him;
we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here.”
Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them.
He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold
and making a splendid appearance.
The LORD said,
“There–anoint him, for this is he!”
Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand,
anointed him in the midst of his brothers;
and from that day on, the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.
When Samuel took his leave, he went to Ramah.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 89:20, 21-22, 27-28

R. (21a) I have found David, my servant.
Once you spoke in a vision,
and to your faithful ones you said:
“On a champion I have placed a crown;
over the people I have set a youth.”
R. I have found David, my servant.
“I have found David, my servant;
with my holy oil I have anointed him,
That my hand may be always with him,
and that my arm may make him strong.”
R. I have found David, my servant.
“He shall say of me, ‘You are my father,
my God, the Rock, my savior.’
And I will make him the first-born,
highest of the kings of the earth.”
R. I have found David, my servant.

Gospel
Mk 2:23-28

As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath,
his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.
At this the Pharisees said to him,
“Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
He said to them,
“Have you never read what David did
when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?
How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest
and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat,
and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them,
“The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

Mk 2:23-28
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
23 And it came to pass again, as the Lord walked through the corn fields on the sabbath, that his disciples began to go forward and to pluck the ears of corn. et factum est iterum cum sabbatis ambularet per sata et discipuli eius coeperunt praegredi et vellere spicas
24 And the Pharisees said to him: Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? Pharisaei autem dicebant ei ecce quid faciunt sabbatis quod non licet
25 And he said to them: Have you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry, himself and they that were with him? et ait illis numquam legistis quid fecerit David quando necessitatem habuit et esuriit ipse et qui cum eo erant
26 How he went into the house of God, under Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the loaves of proposition, which was not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave to them who were with him? quomodo introiit in domum Dei sub Abiathar principe sacerdotum et panes propositionis manducavit quos non licet manducare nisi sacerdotibus et dedit eis qui cum eo erant
27 And he said to them: The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. et dicebat eis sabbatum propter hominem factum est et non homo propter sabbatum
28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord of the sabbath also. itaque dominus est Filius hominis etiam sabbati

It was something I felt drawn to do for myself. So there is a little bit of selfishness in putting them online here.

Meditation
1 Samuel 16:1-13

Poor Samuel. As a prophet and divinely appointed king-maker, he had to keep adjusting his ideas of what was best for Israel. When the people demanded a king “like all the nations” (1 Samuel 8:5), Samuel told them what a bad idea that was. Why did they need a king when they had God? Finally, the prophet came around to agreeing with God that the people were so stubborn he should do what they demanded.

Next, God directed him to anoint Saul king. The new king depended heavily on Samuel, and all went well for a time. But before very long, Saul got tired of following Samuel’s directives. He took matters into his own hands and displeased God so much that the Lord told Samuel, “I regret that I made Saul king” (1 Samuel 15:11). This made Samuel angry and depressed.

God spoke strongly to his prophet. “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out” (1 Samuel 16:1). Step by step, God led Samuel to anoint David to succeed Saul.

Like Samuel, we often get stuck when God has moved on. Sometimes we linger in a good place, where we recall God’s blessing. We want things to stay the same forever. Sometimes we are trapped by unfulfilled dreams: marriage, parenthood, career, success. Sometimes we are disappointed when a fine thing turns sour. We try to figure out what we did wrong and are weighed down with guilt. But we are so busy looking back that we miss God’s invitation to move on with him.

God did not reveal the whole picture to Samuel at once. He simply directed him to go to Bethlehem with his flask of oil, “and I will show you what you shall do” (1 Samuel 16:3). We all know how this journey turned out, providing Israel with David, her greatest king. Although David had years of battle before his actual coronation, his anointing ended Samuel’s mission to the kings of Israel.

What unchangeable piece of the past are you grieving over today? How is God inviting you to move forward with him into a future full of hope?

“Lord, the past often entangles me in regret and blinds me to your presence here and now. Help me to lift up my eyes and move forward with you in trust and faith.”

Psalm 89:20-22,27-28; Mark 2:23-28

QUIT CRYING

"How long will you grieve for Saul, whom I have rejected as king of Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way." —1 Samuel 16:1

Many Spirit-filled Christians are grieving because of the condition of the Church. They're very disappointed in their pastors. They see the demonic strongholds in the Church. They lament the cooling of the Christian faith through secular humanism.

God's word to us is: "Quit crying and start anointing with the Holy Spirit." Like Samuel, we are to fill our horns with oil and get going. The One in us is greater than the one in the world (1 Jn 4:4). We should attack the gates of hell, which cannot prevail against us (Mt 16:18). Satan ought to be shedding more tears than we are.

Remember, we don't just have a chance to win; we have already won in Jesus' death and resurrection. Victory is assured because our victory in Jesus is final. "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rm 8:31) "We are more than conquerors because of Him Who has loved us" (Rm 8:37). Even when we let the devil win temporarily, we can repent and let the Lord make "all things work together for the good of those who love God" (Rm 8:28). All the problems in the world and in the Church ain't nothin' the Holy Spirit can't handle.

Prayer: Father, put a smile on my face, a spring in my step, and joy in my heart. Thank You for Jesus' victory.
Promise: "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the sabbath." —Mk 2:27-28
Praise: St. Anthony received the anointing of the Spirit in such a life-changing way that he sold all his possessions and lived as a hermit.

Compline -- Night Prayer

Compline (Night Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 142 (143)
A prayer in time of trouble
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me. Alleluia.
Lord, listen to my prayer:
 in your faithfulness turn your ear to my pleading;
 in your justice, hear me.
Do not judge your servant:
nothing that lives can justify itself before you.

The enemy has hounded my spirit,
he has crushed my life to the ground,
he has shut me in darkness, like the dead of long ago.
So my spirit trembles within me,
 my heart turns to stone.
I remind myself of the days of old,
I reflect on all your works,
I meditate once more on the work of your hands.
I stretch out my arms to you,
I stretch out my soul, like a land without water.

Come quickly and hear me, O Lord,
 for my spirit is weakening.
Do not hide your face from me,
do not let me be like the dead,
who go down to the underworld.
Show me your mercy at daybreak,
because of my trust in you.
Tell me the way I should follow,
for I lift up my soul towards you.
Rescue me from my enemies:
Lord, I flee to you for refuge.
Teach me to do your will,
 for you are my God.

Your good spirit will lead me to the land of justice;
for your name’s sake, Lord, you will give me life.
In your righteousness you will lead my soul
 away from all tribulation.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me. Alleluia.

Reading 1 Peter 5:8-9
Be calm and keep watch. The Devil, your enemy, is circling you like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, strong in faith.

Short Responsory ?
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle Nunc Dimittis
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
 You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia.

Prayer
Let us pray.
Of your kindness, Lord, dispel the darkness of this night, so that we your servants may go to sleep in peace and wake to the light of the new day, rejoicing in your name.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
A M E N
An antiphon to Our Lady should be recited here.
