Mormon missionary shot and killed in Chesapeake, Virginia
The Virginian Pilot ^ | 1/2/2005 | Jim Washington

Posted on 01/02/2006 7:39:23 PM PST by gregwest

CHESAPEAKE - A 21-year-old Mormon missionary died Monday night after he and his partner were shot while going door-to-door in the Deep Creek area.

The other missionary, age 19, was in serious condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Monday night, Chesapeake police said.

Police did not release the victims’ identities.

According to police the two missionaries were walking in the 2600 block of Elkhart Street off George Washington Highway about 6 p.m. when they were approached by another man. The man shot them both and fled on foot.

One of the victims ran to The Charity House, a nearby nursing home, to seek help.

Police described the suspect as a black male, about 5’10’’ wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He was last seen heading toward Janice Lynn Court, which backs up to Elkhart.

The two missionaries had bicycles, but were not riding them at the time.

A group from the Mormon church, known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, waited in the consultation room at the Norfolk General emergency room Monday night. They declined to comment.

According to the church’s official web site there are more than 60,000 Mormon missionaries, mostly young men and women who volunteer to spread the church’s message for one and a half to two years all over the world, at their own expense.

There are apartment buildings at the end of Elkhart Street, and some residents could not leave or return to their homes for a time Monday night.

Police, working in a moderate rain, had the street blocked off a short way off George Washington Highway.

“This is close to home,’’ said resident Bobby Gatling. He has lived on the block for two years. “Nothing like this has ever happened here before.’’

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

She must get her info from the fact that we observe Good Friday and then on Sunday we celebrate his resurrection.
I bet she believes that Dec. 25 is Christ's actual birthday... lol

Are people at this forum too lazy to check replies on their own?

No, we're not too lazy to check replies on our own but they have to show up as replies when you hit the *View Replies* button and that won't happen unless you include their name in the *To:* section of the post. If you are going to address someone's responses and expect them to know about it, YOU are the one responsible to make sure they know. If you think that people have enough time to check over every post on every thread that they posted a response to, then you have another thing coming, cause it isn't happening; it's just not practical. I pinged colorcountry out of courtesy because he brought this to my attention.

Hmmm, I searched for that post expressing your condolences on this thread. Must have missed it. Can you point me to it? Thanks.

Post 341....

It was a senseless act, having nothing to do with his religion.

Sorry you missed it.

Don't you know? According to the Gospels he died and was buried on Friday and arose Sunday morning. Where does it say different? Where am I presuming anything? I only quoted the words of Jesus Christ himself where he was prophesying about his Death and Resurrection and you're accusing me of being presumptuous. If I may direct you back to my comment. I quoted Christ when I said that he was "in the heart of the earth" for 3 days and 2 nights. I was using His terminology. It's nice to see you trying to twist Christ's own words. You will do everything but give an honest answer to my claim that the Bible show's Jesus Christ contradicting Himself over the most important event in history and therefore is fallible.

Thanks. I'll leave you to trying to convert the rest of us to your way of thinking. I'm done on the thread. I'll leave it up to Christ to judge our actions on Judgement Day.

Go read my post #359. Before you go off half-cocked.
Maybe you could show me where in the New Testament it says that polygamy is o.k.
I don't understand the obsession mormons have with some of the practices in the Old Testament. Newflash: Some things that were O.K. in the Old Testament were no longer O.K. or after the Christ. For example, how many times did God tell someone in the OT to kill someone else? And did God not have people stoned? Worshiping God required so much more, for example the burnt offerings and things like that. I am not a biblical scholar so these are off the top of my head.

As for Joseph Smith yes he was a pervert. One of his wives was 14. Did he not make a vow to be faithful to Emma when he married her?
As for that angel with the sword that appeared to him, I must give him credit for being creative. Lots of guys are kicking themselves for not coming up with that one first.
My theory is whatever you want to believe fine. But lighten up. If people snicker at some of the strange things mormons do such as the special underwear, secret handshakes, multiple wives, whatever, so what? Can you honestly say that you don't think some other religions have some strange practices? Scientology, Islam, Amish to name a few.

Don't you mean leave it up to Joseph Smith?
"No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith. From the day that the Priesthood was taken from the earth to the winding up scene of all things, every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are" (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 289).

No, I meant what I said. We worship Jesus Christ as our Lord and Redeemer. We revere Joseph Smith as a prophet of God. Jesus Christ will be our judge on Judgement Day, just like it says in the Bible.

I just love it when y'all try to tell us what our beliefs are as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

I don't expect anybody to read what I have written. I do understand that some may not have time to see every single reply to their post. I just think it's irresponsible for those, including you, who have posted attacks against the LDS Church on a thread talking about someone's murder to do it without really anything concrete to back it up except personal opinion, contextually wrong information, or anti-Mormon sources.

I have not made any personal attacks. In fact, I made sure anyone who reads my first post would know exactly what statements I was countering. So, I was actually being courteous to all of you by only responding to your statements and staying away from personal attacks. From the tone of some the posts since then, you "negative Mormon posters" can't seem to keep from scraping the personal attack line.

Again, I was defending someone who now cannot defend himself.

On a different note, when the creep who did this is convicted of first-degree murder, I think he should be sent to prison without parole (I am pretty sure Virginia has the death penalty.) I would bet that when the other inmates find out he killed a Mormon missionary, he will get the normal treatment that rapists and child molesters get in prison.

Charincol attributed, apparently, the absurdities of some of the early Mormon writings to "anti-Mormon websites," without acknowledging that the primary documents themselves (journal of discourses, "the pearl of great price," etc.) are the primary texts populating these websites. I think the good fruit of the Mormon church has next to nothing to do with the sometimes insane shenanigans of Brigham and Joseph. It has everything to do with the fact that many Mormons walk with Christ, despite the nutty theology.

Maybe it's because you guys have been so offensive in your un-Christlike actions and total disregard for tact and good taste.

Happened on two other threads that I know of.
One sounded like a United Auto Workers convention, the other was when MD4BUSH first appeared.
