Psalm: Friday 48

Reading I
Wis 13:1-9

All men were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God,
and who from the good things seen did not succeed in knowing him who is,
and from studying the works did not discern the artisan;
But either fire, or wind, or the swift air,
or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water,
or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods.
Now if out of joy in their beauty they thought them gods,
let them know how far more excellent is the Lord than these;
for the original source of beauty fashioned them.
Or if they were struck by their might and energy,
let them from these things realize how much more powerful is he who made them.
For from the greatness and the beauty of created things
their original author, by analogy, is seen.
But yet, for these the blame is less;
For they indeed have gone astray perhaps,
though they seek God and wish to find him.
For they search busily among his works,
but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair.
But again, not even these are pardonable.
For if they so far succeeded in knowledge
that they could speculate about the world,
how did they not more quickly find its Lord?

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 19:2-3, 4-5ab

R. (2a) The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day pours out the word to day,
and night to night imparts knowledge.
R. The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
Not a word nor a discourse
whose voice is not heard;
Through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.
R. The heavens proclaim the glory of God.

Gospel
Lk 17:26-37

Jesus said to his disciples:
“As it was in the days of Noah,
so it will be in the days of the Son of Man;
they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage up to the day
that Noah entered the ark,
and the flood came and destroyed them all.
Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot:
they were eating, drinking, buying,
selling, planting, building;
on the day when Lot left Sodom,
fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all.
So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed.
On that day, someone who is on the housetop
and whose belongings are in the house
must not go down to get them,
and likewise one in the field
must not return to what was left behind.
Remember the wife of Lot.
Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,
but whoever loses it will save it.
I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed;
one will be taken, the other left.
And there will be two women grinding meal together;
one will be taken, the other left.”
They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?”
He said to them, “Where the body is,
there also the vultures will gather.”

The Word Among Us

Meditation
Wisdom 13:1-9

From the most perceptive to the most simple, each and every one of us can know God. How? Through our eyes, ears, and hands. As the Book of Wisdom tells us, “from the greatness and the beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator” (Wisdom 13:5). Repeatedly, Scripture teaches that what can be known about God is plain. The earth and skies reveal his glory and his deeds (Psalm 19:1). His power and godhead can be perceived in things that have been made (Romans 1:19-20). He has left us countless clues!

While it may sound too theoretical to be of much use, this truth is deeply encouraging. God is not too high or too distant for us to know. He is not just for the privileged few. No, we can all hear him, feel him, and, by analogy, see him. But we do have to quiet ourselves to listen to him. We do have to make ourselves available and ponder what we know and see of him. Ask questions, look for answers that might come during our day. Be ready to step out in faith in any direction we perceive the Lord leading.

Noah and Lot saw God’s glory, and responded, though they didn’t know where it would take them (Luke 17:26-30). All it required of them was one step in faith, not full understanding with a detailed map of their course. Just one step. So it is with us, too. And to help us respond faithfully, God continues to give us glimpses of himself. The beauty of creation tells of his glory; the complexity of a song reveals his creativity; the force of human love gives us a taste of his power and faithfulness. God is always talking; are we listening?

We can take these truths to heart, so that in times of wavering, we can look to the visible evidence of the one who loves us. When we worry about doing the right thing, when scruples begin to paralyze us, we can recall that God is big enough to correct our missteps. Even if we aren’t sure where we’ll end up, we can still trust that he is leading us.

“Father, I want to follow you. Help me to hear your voice, and give me courage to obey. Most of all, help me to put my trust in you, whom I can see and know.”

Luke 17:26-37; Psalm 19:2-5

OUT OF THIS WORLD

"Whoever tries to preserve his life will lose it; whoever loses it will keep it." —Luke 17:33

On the last day many people will be totally "out of it," meaning reality, because they are now totally "in it," meaning the world. To be worldly is to be out of touch with reality. The worldly act as if this earthly life is all there is. That's a devastating omission. When Jesus comes, planet earth burns (2 Pt 3:7), and Judgment Day is here, the worldly will be buying a pack of cigarettes or looking at TV Guide. They will be taking out insurance policies and making investments, but it will be all over in seconds.

Jesus said: "As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. They ate and drank, they took husbands and wives, right up to the day Noah entered the ark — and when the flood came, it destroyed them all" (Lk 17:26-27). There's no fool like a damned fool. "I have often said this to you before; this time I say it with tears. Such as these will end in disaster! Their god is their belly and their glory is in their shame. I am talking about those who are set upon the things of this world" (Phil 3:18-19). To be in the world means to be out of touch with reality. The worldly fear reality and try to escape from it. To be out of this world is the only way to be real. Only the otherworldly can stand to be conscious.

Prayer: Jesus, without You I could not stand to live.
Promise: "For if they so far succeeded in knowledge that they could speculate about the world, how did they not more quickly find its Lord?" —Wis 13:9
Praise: Before St. Martin died, he insisted on a peacemaking trip to a parish in his diocese, and then was ready to return to his heavenly home.

Did you check in on the Canteen thread....

Good idea. But for my home Net access, the Canteen thread has so much power that it won't open on my home Net access...I usually check threads like that at the library, but the libraries are all closed for Vet's Day!

Lk 17:26-37
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
26 And as it came to pass in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. et sicut factum est in diebus Noe ita erit et in diebus Filii hominis
27 They did eat and drink, they married wives and were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark and the flood came and destroyed them all. edebant et bibebant uxores ducebant et dabantur ad nuptias usque in diem qua intravit Noe in arcam et venit diluvium et perdidit omnes
28 Likewise as it came to pass in the days of Lot. They did eat and drink, they bought and sold, they planted and built. similiter sicut factum est in diebus Loth edebant et bibebant emebant et vendebant plantabant aedificabant
29 And in the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. qua die autem exiit Loth a Sodomis pluit ignem et sulphur de caelo et omnes perdidit
30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man shall be revealed. secundum haec erit qua die Filius hominis revelabitur
31 In that hour, he that shall be on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away: and he that shall be in the field, in like manner, let him not return back. in illa hora qui fuerit in tecto et vasa eius in domo ne descendat tollere illa et qui in agro similiter non redeat retro
32 Remember Lot's wife. memores estote uxoris Loth
33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose it shall preserve it. quicumque quaesierit animam suam salvare perdet illam et qui perdiderit illam vivificabit eam
34 I say to you: In that night there shall be two men in one bed. The one shall be taken and the other shall be left. dico vobis illa nocte erunt duo in lecto uno unus adsumetur et alter relinquetur
35 Two women shall be grinding together. The one shall be taken and the other shall be left. Two men shall be in the field. The one shall be taken and the other shall be left. duae erunt molentes in unum una adsumetur et altera relinquetur duo in agro unus adsumetur et alter relinquetur
36 They answering, say to him: Where, Lord? respondentes dicunt illi ubi Domine
37 Who said to them: Wheresoever the body shall be, thither will the eagles also be gathered together. qui dixit eis ubicumque fuerit corpus illuc congregabuntur aquilae
