The Church of the Resurrection parish in Solon, Ohio is displaying a blasphemous, sensual portrayal of the Blessed Mother. Diocesan chancellor Father Ralph E. Wiatrowski of Cleveland, has defended the display of the statue saying that like the "Last Judgment" scene, figures are not nude but in gossamer robes. Father Wiatrowski says he was assured this by the parish. "Tastes in art vary from person to person," he argued. "The Blessed Mother is clothed." His views first came to light in a letter to a local woman who had complained about new age practices of reiki (demonic, temporary healing) and yoga ("serpent power" ascending from the base of the spine).

Replied the woman who had complained, "I received your response and looked again at the photo of the statue of Mary. I must have a problem with my eyesight because, to me, the outline of the Blessed Mother's body is quite obvious. Again I have to say that this is a very sacrilegious way to show respect for the person whose name is synonymous with purity and modesty."

This sort of thing isn't necessarily deliberate blasphemy. A couple of years ago I started work on a manga version of the Rosary. Unfortunately, due to my style of art, every time I tried to draw Our Lady, what I ended up with was a cute and slightly sexy teenage girl. I struggled with this for a good long while, but in the end I decided my artistic skills were not up to the task of depicting our Lord and His mother in an appropriate way, and I shelved the project.

Perhaps the artist in this case should have done likewise.

Based on the picture, I doubt it. It's not the way the face is carved, it's the depiction of the body.

This Protestant, for one, is offended. Although it wouldn't be appropriate in a church context regardless of who it's supposed to be.

This doesn't have anything to do with the thread, but I wanted to ask some of you about some colleges that we're looking at for our daughter who graduates high school in the spring.

She wants to go into Digital Video Editing, and I've only found three Catholic colleges, so far, that have anything like this type of major. I want to know if you have any idea about the orthodoxy of the colleges. I looked them up on the Cardinal Newman Society website, but it actually doesn't give any guarantees about the schools, it just de-lists those that are particularly egregious.

The colleges we're looking at include DePaul in Chicago, Canisius in Buffalo, NY and Marywood in Scranton, PA. We're going to Naples next month for the Open House at Ave Maria, unfortunately, they don't have the major she wants. She could do her first two years there then go to a secular private college to do her major work. We wanted her to have her first two years, at least, at a good Catholic college, and the she could move to a different school for the technical education.

Thanks for that list. As I said, the problem is finding a school that offers the major she'd like. Barring that she'll likely do Ave Maria or one of the other schools for a couple of years, then go on to the University of Advancing Technology in Phoenix for the technical part of the major.

SirKit and I were hoping that Ave Maria would add some serious computer science or engineering to their academic programs when their student body starts to increase. I haven't found any good Catholic colleges yet that are computer science, hard science and engineering oriented. It seems like they're all Liberal Arts. That's a huge population of Catholic students whose needs aren't being met.

Catholic U. has sciences, but it seems it's mostly geared toward the natural sciences for pre-med majors.

There is a new college opening in San Diego, John Paul the Great, that will be heavily media oriented, but they aren't even recruiting yet because they haven't received the charter, or whatever they need, from the State of California. There's also supposed to be a new one opening in the Diocese of Phoenix, but that one's so new, according the the Cardinal Newman Society website, there isn't even a name for it yet, I don't think.

Yup. There's no easy solution to that one. I went to an engineering school back in the '80s and it wasn't hard to get into trouble. The only difficulty for guys like me was that we had to go off campus to find women. It was 9-1 guys. But if I had a girl, I would hesitate to send her to an all-engineering school unless she was living off campus.

Actually in the "Last Judgment" everyone, even Christ, is nearly naked except for the Virgin Mary. She is quite modestly clothed. Even the homosexual Michelangelo knew better than to do that.
