Mary was born fifteen years,three months and seventeen days before the birth of Jesus. She was born in a house in which,fourteen years,six months and seventeen days later,the Archangel Gabriel,sent by God,would come and kneel before her and with a bowed head would say, "Hail,full of grace,the Lord is with thee." Mary was three years,two months and thirteen days old when she was presented by her parents to GOD in the Temple. She was fourteen years old when she was espoused to Joseph ANd she was fourteen years,four months and fifteen day old when her espousals to Saint Jpseph were solemnized. She was in her forty-eighth year when Jesus suffered the Passion and death on the cross,and Jesus gave her to John and to all the Faithful as their own Mother!-when Jesus and rose from the dead,and ascended into Heaven,in the year 33. MAry was seventy-two years old when she herself,died and was three days later assumed into Heaven ,in the year 58. Mary has the compassionate heart of a good Mother. She hears those who ask her for help and she leads them on to Jesus. She knows well, all about suffering,sorrow,joy, fear,love and war. please take one second of your time Sept.8th-and wish the Mother of Jesus a Happy Birthday! Ask her to help those at Katrina,at Iraq,in your own life and those of your families,and learn how to say the rosary,and wear the brown scapular.

I'm sorry but none of these dates are found in the Bible. Nowhere in the Bible does it say Mary was 15 when Jesus was born. If it's not in the accepted books of the Bible, then I can't believe it. Where could this possibly be from? Even sources from tradition don't provide dates this detailed. I've never heard any of this before.
I agree - I firmly believe in the existence of Mary, the mother of Jesus (unlike someone above) - but where did these precise dates come from? I am a student of the Word, and I have never seen this one.

Much of the knowledge which The Church has about the details of the life of the Theotokos comes from Holy Tradition, in other words, that body of information held by the early Church against which the bishops measured the canonicity of various spiritual writings of the era to determine what would make up the canon of the NT. There are also a number of apocryphal writings, like the Protoevangelium of St. James which describe events in her life in great detail. The celebration of the birth of the Theotokos as a feast day has been going on in The Church from the 1st Century, at least in the East.

Thank-you. It has to be from Tradition because it's not straight out of the Bible. I didn't think that there were such distinct dates for Mary in Traditional writings. It is interesting to read about these, but not so easy to believe for someone not in the Orthodox Church, IMHO. I will seek out some more information on this from the internet.

You have derived your dates from tradition. I have derived my dates from the Bible....and I will show you to be in error.
Jesus was one or two years old when the Wise men visited, Matthew 2:7-8(the exact time the star had appeared). He, at that time, was living in a house in Bethlehem, Matthew 2:11. Herod gave orders to kill all male babies 2 and under(just to be safe), Matthew 2:16....The important part of this scripture is...."in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi"(Wise Men).
King Herod the Great is documented in history(several different sources)to have lived from 73-4 B.C. Jesus, obviously was born before King Herod died.
We know from scripture that Jesus had a ministry that was at least 3 years in duration. Three different passovers are mentioned in John's gospel that Jesus celebrated during his ministry, John 2:13; John 6:4; and John 11:55. We know that Jesus was ordained a priest after the order of Melchizedek, Hebrews 5:10. We also know that young Hebrew men usually began their priesthood at the age 30, Numbers 4:3.
We know that Christ was our Passover Lamb, 1 Corinthians 5:7....the blood sacrifice for our sins. We know that Passover was always celebrated on Nisan 14 on the Hebrew Calendar and as our sacrifice he would have been put to death on that date. We also know that Christ was put in the tomb before sundown that date, John 19:31 and John 19:42. The Passover that Jesus was crucified on was also the "Day of Preparation" for the Annual Sabbath of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This is the special(not weekly) Sabbath spoken of in this verse....as well as Luke 23:54...and Mark 15:42...and Matthew 27:62.
We also know that Jesus was in the tomb for 72 hours... not one minute earlier or one minute later. The "only" sign he was to give as the sign of his Messiah ship was the length of time spent in the tomb, Matthew 12:39-40, three days and three nights. Fairly clear! Mark 8:31 "After 3 days rise again" this cannot be anything thing less than 72 hours. Mark 9:31 "He shall rise the third day" this cannot be anything longer than 72 hours or shorter than 48. Matthew 27:63, "After 3 days I will rise again", this cannot be anything less than 72 hours. John 2:19-21, "In three days I will raise it up", this cannot be anything more than 72 hours.
Hebrew days began at sundown, Genesis 1:3 Evening and Morning...The first day. Christ would have been placed in the tomb on Nisan 14(Passover) shortly before sundown. Nisan 15 would have been the evening part of the Feast of Unleavened Bread...the next morning would still have been Nisan 15, an annual Sabbath. Nisan 16 would begin at the next sundown. Mark 16:1 Mary Magdalene and her companion did not buy spices to anoint the body of Jesus until the Sabbath was past. This means that they bought the spices on Nisan 16(probably during the day part). Yet, they rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment....after preparing the spices, Luke 23:56. That crucifixion week had TWO SABBATHS. The annual High Holy Day and the weekly Sabbath. That's why you see those verses in scripture to make that certain.
Now we know the tomb was empty early on the first day of the week, Luke 24:1...Mark 16:2...Matthew 28:1...John 20:1 and here it says "early while it was still dark". These scriptures all relate to the visit to the tomb early on the first day of the week. Don't forget...the Hebrews began their days at sundown. And Jesus had already arisen! Of course he had....he was only in the tomb 72 hours and came out shortly before sundown three days after he was buried. We know that there was a day between the two Sabbaths because that's when they bought the spices. We know our Lord was in the tomb three full days....like he said he would be! Now we also know that he was resurrected before sunset on the weekly Sabbath.
If you use a Hebrew calendar and knowing that Jesus was born before Herod died and was crucified on a Wednesday and remained in the grave from Wednesday sunset(our time)through Saturday sunset you will find that 27 A.D. is the most likely year of the crucifixion. Nisan 14 occurs on Wednesday and Thursday is Nisan 15, The Feast of Unleavened Bread and Friday would have been the day Mary and her companion bought the spices and Saturday would have been Resurrection day... shortly before sunset. Using this year would have Jesus being born in 6 B.C. Herod, by documented history, died 2 years later.
Which brings me to my point. By using your traditional date, how old would Mary have been in 6 B.C.? The only other close by year with all of the qualifications I have listed would be 24 A.D. The church, by using the current dating system, assumes that Christ was crucified in the year 33 A.D. but we now know this to be in error because in that year Nisan 14(Passover) occurred on a Friday...and that's why the church set up this dating system because they erroneously believed the crucifixion happened on a Friday. Not true! No matter how hard you try you cannot squeeze three full days into a Friday afternoon/Sunday morning affair. And besides, I have given you much proof to show it was other than that.
You say Mary was born in 16 B.C. If this had been the case she would have been 10 years old when Jesus was actually born. I don't believe this and like I say, my sources are documented history and the Bible. I believe your source is your tradition.

There shouldn't have been a year zero. There would have been a first day, a first month, and a first year; thus, the first day would have been 01/01/01 (if they'd had digital clocks back then). They would eventually have had to deal with the Y1C problem, though.
There was no year zero. The words Anno Domini mean the Year of our Lord. If he had been born on the 4th of July it would be referred to as 7/4/01....or simply put, July 4th, year he was born. The previous year would have the designation, year 1 B.C....or the year before he was born. There was no year zero.

I believe it's commonly accepted that Jesus was born in 3, or 6, or 7 "before Christ" -- which is kind of silly but there you go. But the dates given in the post largely revolve around the actual birth of Christ, not the one miscalculated by that dude who set up the whole A.D. thing.
Tradition tells us a great deal, and if some of the feast days aren't celebrated on the actual historical anniversary, what of it? The point is to commemorate them on an appropriate day, and unless you have a better source for Mary's birth day than tradition dating back to people who lived during Mary's life .....
And you celebrate the birth of Christ on what day?
