Prayer for the Election of a Pope - Lord God, you are our eternal shepherd and guide. In your mercy grant your Church a shepherd who will walk in your ways and whose watchful care will bring us your blessing. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Collect, Mass for the Election of a Pope, Roman Missal)

I expect our local Catholic girls high school will be in mourning, it is run by very liberal nuns.

I am expecting that Benedict will make more than one liberal cry...I wonder if he will be able to do anything about the travesty that is Notre Dame?

Well, they are welcome to 'pack up' and move on to another 'more progressive' institution.

Close the door on your way out and have a nice trip :)

I teach, and all the students were able to watch on TV and see him come out. We all kneeled down for his blessing.

I have to admit that I was crying and crying as we awaited assurance.

I prayed to the Holy Spirit for Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) ... or Cardinal Arinze ... but my heart was in my throat!

Those tears changed to sobs of joy as the announcement was made.

How I feared that the Conclave would be usurped by Satan.

My prayers for this man, who may be the only man alive, who may, in his own way, fill the shoes and follow the footsteps of John Paul the Great.

May the lord bless His pilgrim church on earth

Long live Pope Benedict XVI

Awesome! Simply Awesome!

I was riding back to the office after lunch out with a dear old friend, a retired priest, when I heard the news on Rush's radio program.

I started pumping my fist in the air, shouting "Yes!Yes!Yes!"

I think I startled poor old Father, but he had a broad smile on his face nonetheless!

I am simply tickled.

I was praying for the cardinal-electors, and my prayers were answered abundantly.

Oh man! I was in the office at the Church and everyone was in the priest's office. Sister was horrified and so was our priest (he's conservative but he thinks priests should be able to get married, he's also sick and in a bad ass mood). I defended Ratzinger a little and they didn't want to hear and then I went back to my office and jumped up and down for joy. I thanked God heartily. I didn't pray for Ratzinger, I have just been praying to the Holy Spirit to come and renew the face of the earth.

... because, as we've seen before on other threads, you're clearly a person of good conscience.
Hey, it's not like Catholics are the only ones ever touched by the Holy Spirit.
God bless you and yous for rejoicing with us.

Polycarp!?! Is that you?

It's nice to see you again. I was wondering where you'd gone off to.

Please add me to your PING list.

I guess I don't know the prediction but I do know that the Benedictines ran the inquisition. I have thought for a long time that the Inquisition got a bad rap given the culture and context of the time. It actually was the first stirrings of due process. Trial by whatever.

Polycarp!?! Is that you?

The one and only.

When I met Jim Robinson, he said, "Polycarp? You mean 'Polycarp...IV' ?!?"

Yep ;-)

It was the Dominicans who ran the inquisition. The Benedictines are an order of basically isolated monasteries, without the same sort of organization as preachers and workers against heretics that the Dominicans were founded to be.

You are right. By justice of the era, the church courts were more fair and just than the state run courts.
