By encouraging people to follow the laws of God written on their hearts, they become closer to the One True God. Interfaith dialogue as discussed by the Church won't result in an Islamic Mullah becoming a Christian. The Church recognizes correctly that these other established religions are just as important to their followers. By promoting fellowship among all peoples, they are drawn closer to our God. The idea is to bear fruit down the road, not today.
So I agree with you, and I agree with Cardinal Arinze...
To: Romulus
You're quite mistaken. Man's sense of humor is one of the ways in which he's the image of God. But your having a sense of humor and taking impudent liberties are two different things.Lighten up will ya? Geez.

The first ballot today is usually ceremonial, in which cardinals vote for people out of sympathy or national pride.
Do we know for certain, though, that there will be a vote taken today?
To: Remole
All in all, for the first time, I have the feeling that I wouldn't be surprised if Card. Ratzinger were chosen on the 3rd ballot (i.e., the second one tomorrow). I would. The cardinals all seemed to be saying that the next Pope should follow in JPII's outreach to the world.
Ratzinger, at 78, would be a stay-at-home Pope, and would signify that the Cardinals had changed their minds about wanting a pastor instead of an administrator.
Ratzinger hasn't governed a diocese in 24 years.

For those obsessed with St. Malacy and the end of the world, any Pope elected will fit this prophecy, one way or another :-)
So true, so true : )

Not for certain. But I'd be very surprised if they did not vote.

Sink--Until 1 pm Rome time today, I would have agreed with you. And I still think that the cardinals will end up going with a compromise candidate, someone acceptable to the Ratzinger--George--Arinze axis but also to the 3rd worlders. Thus my hunch about Bergoglio. But, geez, after listening to his two homilies, and seeing how well he handled the meetings last week, wouldn't there be 77 cardinals who see in front of them the next Pope? Again, for the first time, I wouldn't be surprised.

Ratzinger, at 78, would be a stay-at-home Pope Ya think he's too old to board an airplane????!?!?
While Ratzinger is not my guess to be the next Pope (and I have no reason to think the H.S. has given me any special insight) it seems obvious to me he can do the job and do it well if indeed he would be elected.
