I haven't heard of this till just now. If it's as you say, it's a cause for concern. Still, there's a lot of misunderstanding about "salvation outside the Church", so I wouldn't want to pre-judge Arinze without having seen what he said. Remember, the document Dominus Iesus issued by Cardinal Ratzinger in 2000 explicitly allows the (theoretical, but problematical) possibility of salvation for non-Catholics and even non-Christians. The does not mean that Jesus would not be their savior too (He is the only savior). It does not mean they are at liberty to disregard Christianity when it is made known to them (they are not). It does mean that God is not limited by means visible to men, and that those wom He chooses in His mercy to save are joined to the Church in a mysterious way we don't understand.

The talk was reported in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, but that paper's web site doesn't maintain an archive of articles. You'd have to find an old paper or read the story on microfilm. Sorry I can't be more help.

Dear Salvation,
I spoke too soon.
If I place my cursor down near the "Free Republic" in the disclaimer at the bottom of the page, right after refreshing, if my URL is addressed to one of the very last posts, it appears for a few brief moments.
Very strange.

""tempus fugit"
I know that phrase! It's Latin, and it means "the times fugit."
I think there is a saying, "Time flies; eternity waits."

Actually, if you do a search on FR for "Arinze" you should be able to view the thread I'm referring to. Good discussion on the thread but maybe you guys might have a different take on it.

I was about to say I don't understand how you can genuflect before the Blessed Sacrament yesterday and make a wisecrack like that today. In fact, I do understand, and it's not pretty.

I was about to say I don't understand how you can genuflect before the Blessed Sacrament yesterday and make a wisecrack like that today. Of course you don't. God gave human beings a sense of humor, but, in your world, He has no sense of humor Himself.

The comments were a serious let down for me as I admire the man greatly.
When people meet in inter-religious dialog, the end isn't to convince the other person to cross over to my religion. If that is the end, it not inter-religious dialog. It is a debate, or an argument, friendly or otherwise. On the other hand, we hold that people who meet in inter-religious discussion and reflection should be open to conversion in another sense -- conversion to God, in the sense of openness to God; that is, the action of God in us. After all, religion is not what we achieve in our Catholic belief; it is merely what God works in us if only we will allow God to do so. -- CARDINAL FRANCIS ARINZE
Stuff like this certainly doesn't impress me.

After a quick read, I'd say Arinze's manner of speaking relies excessively on the assumption that he audience shares his views and semantic conventions. To everyone else (including Catholics not trained in the idiom of his particular mission) he comes across as ambiguous or worse. Arninze needs to understand that not everyone can hear what he's saying unless he uses terms common to all.

You're quite mistaken. Man's sense of humor is one of the ways in which he's the image of God. But your having a sense of humor and taking impudent liberties are two different things.

It's pretty clear that the first couple ballots will all deal with Ratzinger. His two homilies (at funeral and at Pro Eligendo mass today) have revealed his heart and mind; he's chaired the meetings of the Cardinals all last week. And so the first order of business will be: should he be Bishop of Rome, or not? The first ballot today is usually ceremonial, in which cardinals vote for people out of sympathy or national pride. But tomorrow's second ballot will reveal quite a lot: if Card. Ratzinger's numbers go up, then we may have a very short conclave; but if his number goes down, then we will have a long-ish one (3-4 days) as the cardinals search around for a compromise candidacy. All in all, for the first time, I have the feeling that I wouldn't be surprised if Card. Ratzinger were chosen on the 3rd ballot (i.e., the second one tomorrow).

Arinze's comments seem perfectly clear, to me. Like Mother Teresa, he takes people where they are. Encounters are not opportunities for arm-twisting evangelization.
What did Mother Teresa say?
We are to help Buddhists be good Buddhists, to help Jews be good Jews, to help Muslims be good Muslims.
