COAST TO COAST AM: The Bible & UFOs, 3/19/05

Presbyterian minister and author, Dr. Barry Downing, believes the Bible was inspired by extraterrestrials who traveled to earth in flying saucers. In his book, The Bible and Flying Saucers, Downing speculates that the pillar of cloud and fire which led Moses and the Israelites during their escape from Egypt was actually a UFO (see Exodus 13:20).

Downing also claims extraterrestrials spoke to Moses through the burning bush, as well as instructed the priests of Israel how to dress in order to protect themselves against radiation from the UFO which hovered over the Tabernacle. He suggests this may account for the Jewish custom of wearing skullcaps during prayer and worship.

Downing, Barry H., BIBLE AND FLYING SAUCERS, THE, 1, 1968, Lippincott, HB. See 1970 entry. Downing was a Presbyterian theologian who specialized in relationships between science and religion. He explores the possibilities that certain events in the Bible are actually UFO interventions. Rather than postulating that man has misinterpreted UFOs, he suggests that the UFOs may have been the agents of God. Downing is really interested in presenting UFOs as a way out of the literalist/ demythological debate going on in theological circles at the time. Although it is interesting to see a theologian treating the subject of UFOs seriously, Downing fails to commit himself to any real conclusion. I suspect that he found his argument taking him in directions he really didn't want to go (see also 1970 and 1973 entries).

More good stuff from 1968 (like High Priest by Timothy Leary, Barbarella, The History of Atlantis, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, among others)

I did tonight, but only after reading this thread. It's a fairly interesting discussion of gnostism, archons, and how they may relate to the UFO phenomina.

I think it is near obvious that the UFO phenomia is real but that UFO's are some sort of imaginary/dream-like thing.

I haven't looked at the Nag Hammadi library in years so I'm finding it interesting.

Art Bell is a sort of side show barker, but some side shows can be interesting.

Side shows can definitely be interesting. I don't know where I stand on UFOs in general, but I have learned over time that there are things in life that I neither know nor understand fully. And here I thought the cliche was that people get more close-minded the older they get.

I'm not really a religiouse anything person, but mixing the bible/Jesus/Christianity with UFOs seems so very very wrong. I was aghast at how many people here have admitted they believe in UFOS especially after that news documentary on NBC or CBS (I forget).

NBC Brings you Revelations in April, 2005 From the writer that wrote The Omen, David Seltzer, comes a TV series that is like The Omen meets The X-Files

Oh this oughta be good. They can't even get the name right. The book is called "Revelation".

[shrug] We're just talking about it. I don't watch NBC or CBS news documentaries so I don't know what show to which you're referring.

Have you had a close relative who worked around the UFO craft routinely? I gather not.

I have.

Plus studying it; collecting puzzle pieces about it since about 1960.

It is conceivable that some of us have learned more than one or two things about the assorted phenomena.

Life and even The Bible are both simple and complex. The complexity leaves lots of room for all kinds of interpretations.
