VATICAN CITY, MARCH 3, 2005 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II, who continues to convalesce in the hospital, named two new bishops, one for the United States and the other for Mexico.

The Pope named Monsignor Salvatore Ronald Matano, a Rhode Island native, as coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Burlington, Vermont, the Vatican press office reported today.

As coadjutor he stands to succeed Bishop Kenneth Angell, who turns 75 in August.

Monsignor Matano, 58, is currently assigned to the staff of the apostolic nunciature in Washington, D.C.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he studied at the Seminary of Our Lady of Providence, the North American College in Rome, and the Gregorian University. He holds a doctorate in canon law.

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Providence in December 1971. From 1997 to 2000, he was parish priest of St. Sebastian's Church and a professor at Providence College. Since 2000, he has worked with the apostolic nunciature.

The Burlington Diocese has 608,000 inhabitants, about a quarter of them Catholics.

The Pope also appointed Bishop Mario Espinosa Contreras of Tehuacan as new the new bishop of Mazatlan, Mexico. He is succeeding Bishop Rafael Barraza Sánchez, 76.

The Pope doesn't singlehandedly appoint the bishops. Like a president appointing judges, the Pope bases most episcopal appointments on recommendations from other bishops.

Hm. Coadjutator for a bishop under 75. That pretty much means that the present bishop has been relieved of his duties. The Burlington diocese is only slightly smaller than average. Anyone know if was Vermont of New Hampshire which kept accepting pedophiles between Albany and Boston?

Providence College is not Orthodox, but it's better than most basketball Catholic colleges. St. Sebastian is familiar; I'm trying to recall if that wasn't the charismatic parish in Providence... I will check with a friend of mine who taught theology at PC. He left me the impression that the parish was fairly orthodox for being charismatic.

(The charismatic movement initially allowed several heretical and Protestant doctrines to flourish within itself; the leadership, however, although nauseatingly PC [other PC!], has gone to great lengths to establish orthodoxy. Franciscan University at Steubenville is a good example of the new relatively orthodox charismaticism.)

Actually, its the papal nuncio who formally makes the recommendations.

"Aw, darnit, Charlie*, I think I'm gonna have to handle this diocese myself!"

(*No, I don't think he dares call the Pope, "Charlie.")

The current bishop has been seriously ill, which is why a coadjutator has been appointed at this time.

Anyone know if was Vermont of New Hampshire which kept accepting pedophiles between Albany and Boston?

I don't believe it was Vermont.
