Cardinal Egan's vandalism at St. Thomas the Apostle church

The Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle:

From Sanctuary to Abortuary

Egan's relentless pursuit of "realignment" is untutored by any notion of churches as tools of Catholic evangelization.

Does he believe Catholic churches only serve the people who are already Catholic? (I had thought, as William Temple famously wrote, that the Church is "the only society on earth that exists for the benefit of non-members.")

If Egan gets his way, many more scenes of heartless, and needless, destruction such as those above will be visited upon New York City. Click on the link above for more evidence of his legally sanctioned vandalism.

"Cardinal" Egan appoints a new church closing/destruction czar: newly consecrated Auxiliary Bishop Denis Sullivan. Egan's article in the current Catholic New Yorker (linked in the article referenced above) calls for a "full court press" to move ahead with and complete the plan of parish closings, and property sales he calls "realignment". In essense, Egan is declaring war on the 100 parishes in Manhattan - sitting upon the most valuable real estate in the world - hell-bent upon closing the churches, seizing their assets, and selling or redeveloping the properties into profitable ventures like nursing homes and government subsidized housing. Note that the threatened parishes are all active congregations, where the active membership exceeds that of most Protestant churches.

Please also note that the pictures of the vandalism done to the church oif st. Thmoas the Apostle was ordered by and paid for by Egan.

It should also be stated that, while in hte process of commiting this horrible act of sacralidge, the demolition workers (D'Ambrosio Studios.....famous liturgical wreckovators)ran frightened and pale faced from the church one day as if they had seen a ghost! they refused to describe exactly what they saw.

Correction to post #1: the pictures in the referenced article are OF the vandalism which was done on Egan's orders, and paid for by Egan.

I gather this is about closing church buildings? The Catholics are not going out of business in Manhattan are they?

This is depressing. What a beautiful Church!

I think the bishop needs to be reminded of the woman who poured expensive perfume on Jesus' feet.

I doubt they are going out of business - but until they get rid of that table, the Churchs will.

LOL! Perhaps our own dear Siobhan led a banshee attack upon the evildoers. I like the thought of that.

Although I was not there, I suspect they had to deal with Angels and Saints!

Saint Ann's Armenian Catholic Cathedral
110 East 12th Street, New York City
Privileged Altar

Declared the National Shrine of Saint Ann by Papal Rescript of August 26, 1929, it is also the primary church in the United States for the Archconfraternity of the Motherhood of Saint Ann. Its main altar is one of only a handful of Privileged Altars in the United States: a Requiem Mass said upon it grants a plenary indulgence to a soul in Purgatory. In 1983, through the good offices of Terence Cardinal Cooke, then-Archbishop of New York, Saint Ann's became the permanent seat, the Cathedral, of the Armenian Catholic Church in North America. Well, the intention was that it would be permanent: thanks to one of Cardinal Cooke's successors, Edward Cardinal Egan, the last Armenian Mass was said on Sunday, February 29, 2004.

What a tragedy!!

The problem is that the full immersion Catholic kiddie splash pool is the current toy of liturgical wreckovators. The purpose is to extract as much money out of the parish, by any imaginable means.

For the bored presbyter - who cannot be bothered preaching the truths of the faith, saying proper valid masses, et. al. this is the thing to do. It keeps him busy and gives him a false sense of accomplishment.

But like the "Reconciliation Room" - which was all the rage in the 70s and 80s - it too will fall into disuse. Along with faith in Christ, obedience to His Vicar, etc.

I've been to that Church. Sorry to see it go, but let's face it, there aren't as many Catholics in secular Manhattan as there were 100 years ago.

One can't help but marvel at the magnificent architecture in these older churches and reflect on the stone carvers who invested so much of themselves, to the glory of God. As the wrecking ball stands ready to smash this travertine to smittereens, other catholic churches have opted to 'modernize' their facilities (no longer referred to as houses of worship).

Compare the magnficent altar at St. Ann's with this "Tabernacle" from the same company that supplied us with the processional samba (Sorry it is not possible to post this as a graphic .... )

http://www.churchbuilding.com/interactive/swf/html/holy_spirit_interior.html

If the churches can fund these plexiglass novelties, packaged and promoted as "visions of enlightenment", then they have the money to maintain the older churches, whose mortgages were long ago paid off.

Recently, a small group of us from my parish, drove to Stockbridge MA to visit the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy. Let me assure you that the EWTN video doesn't do justice to the beautiful and intricately carved interior of the Shrine. From what we heard during our short visit, all of the woodwork was hand carved by a 75 year old man, who gave his time and talent as a gift to God.

After describing the Shrine to our pastor, he pulled out the church calendar and picked a Saturday during Lent when we, as a parish, will return to the Shrine, celebrate our Maronite Divine Liturgy, followed by participation at the other Shrine devotions - Eucharistic Adoration, the Rosary and the Divine Mercy chaplet. It will be a day of prayer and reflection. How blessed are we to have a priest who places the salvation of our souls above all else.

How blessed you must have been to visit the National Shrine of Divine Mercy! I've only seen pictures of it, but it looks like a wonderful place. I know how blessed you are to have such a wonderful and godly man as your priest!"

Your Maronite church is blessed with a very good priest. Treasure and support him as your spiritual father, and as a gift from God.
