HOLY SEE-SAW

BY DUNCAN MAXWELL ANDERSON --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

October 23, 2004 -- The Catholic Church's eternal teaching against killing the innocent by abortion doesn't apply this year — because it might affect the real world. At least, that seemed to be the message from the Vatican this past week. Throughout his career, Sen. John Kerry has called himself a Catholic while promoting abortion — including government-funded abortion.

In June, Los Angeles canon lawyer Marc Balestrieri sued Kerry in Ecclesiastical Court in Boston for heresy. As part of his research, Balestrieri went to the Vatican to ask if a Catholic politician who supports a right to abortion is automatically excommunicated — with no need for any special process or declaration from the pope or a bishop.

Within 10 days, Balestrieri heard from Fr. Basil Cole of Washington, D.C., who wrote to say he'd been asked by Fr. Augustine Di Noia at the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) to answer. Fr. Cole's reply: Yes. Abortion is so evil that any Catholic who publicly supports it is in effect an accessory to the crime, and excommunicates himself by his own action.

Sad to see that the Curia is as wet-noodily as ever. The Democrats and Republicans should siphon off some Vatican operatives to spin, spin, spin.

I think, even the devil himself would claim to be more pro-life than the Pope if it could only be used to attacks the Catholic Church.

Unlike the position of some "Christian" churches, the eternal, unchangeable teaching of the Catholic Church is that abortion is intrinsically evil and cannot be endorsed under any circumstances. Those "Catholics" who procure, or actively participate in it are automatically excommunicated. Amen.

I believe many "conservative" Catholic Freepers think abortion is OK in case of rape and incest as evidenced by their support of President Bush. Do you think if Bush was Catholic he should be excommunicated?

That's one of the things that define your Christianity. For example, one cannot claim to be a Catholic and not believe in God [Who, btw, is the Creator of all life].

I don't know of a single "Catholic Freeper" who supports any form of abortion.

I don't know of any Catholic FReepers who believe that. As you know, one is permitted to vote for the most pro-life of the two candidates running. That would be George W. Bush.

Do you think if Bush was Catholic he should be excommunicated?

Absolutely not. He is pro-life.

But they will vote for a candidate who supports abortion in certain instances (rape and incest) when there are other candidates who oppose abortion under any circumstances. I guess some people just love a winner.

He is pro-life.

Except in cases of rape and incest.

Two candidates?

Who? Peroutka? He has zero chance of winning; he is also light-in-the-loafers in the war on terror.

Yes. Two candidates. Anybody else running for president is inconsequential.

You prove my point that there are Catholic freepers that will support abortion under certain circumstances.

When it means supporting a man who can actually do something about abortion (Bush signed the PBA ban), you betcha.

The only way Peroutka will get into the White House is with a ticket from his congressman.

Is that some sort of comment on Peroutka's masculinity? Are you implying he's queer? Do you make the same asserions about the Pope, who holds the same position as Peroutka on the invasion of Iraq?

If every pro-lifer voted for him he would be elected. I guess abortion just isn't that important.

John Paul II does not oppose the war on terror; he opposed the war on Iraq.

Peroutka is to the left of the Pope on the war on terror; he opposed the war in Afghanistan.

You interpret the "light-in-the-loafers" comment however it makes sense to you. I stand by it as it describes Peroutka's stance on the war on terror.

The pro-abort Planned Parenthood endorses Kerry. It is the Planned Parenthood's very first presidential candidate endorsment ever.

What does it tell you?

Not true. Even if it were, his views are too weird in too many other areas.

It tells me that Kerry is an instrument of Satan.

That's not my point. I believe a lot of Catholics like to look the other way when making tough decisions. They get their kids innoculated with vaccines made from aborted fetuses. They vote for a candidate who believes abortion is ok in certain circumstances because he's the lesser of two evils and because they would be embarrased to support a third-party, truly pro-life candidate (doesn't make for popular conversation at the neighborhood cocktail party). They make these decisions because they fear the results in this world if they lose - all the while ignoring God's will and what's to come in the next world.
