Pope Urges Believers to Proudly Display Signs of Their Faith
VOA News ^ | 08 Oct 2004

Pope John Paul II has urged believers to proudly display the signs of their faith, saying the practice does not encourage intolerance or infringe on the separation of church and state.

In an apostolic letter to Roman Catholics launching the Year of the Eucharist, the pope made no mention of specific problems. But the message follows sharp controversy in France over a government ban on conspicuous religious symbols such as Muslim headscarves, Jewish skullcaps or large crucifixes in the country's schools.

The pontiff also repeated his concern that too few Catholics are giving due reverence to the Eucharist or properly marking Sunday as the Lord's Day.

He also described faith as a means of counteracting violence and a way of bringing attention to such problems as poverty and hunger in the world.

"to proudly display " I thought Pride was a sin? No. Split infinitives, however, are.

"I thought Pride was a sin?"

No, just inordinate pride that put man above God.

Its not a sin. In this context, you are affirming your faith in Jesus The Son of God.

Pride is a sin, but even St. Paul states that his "boast" is in Christ his Lord.

There is no sin in being "proud" of Jesus Christ and what He has done for us, just like there is no sin in worshipping Jesus Christ.

However, pride in ourselves would be sinful just as worshipping ourselves would be sinful.

I applaud the Pope for his statements; this from a conservative Protestant.

Ditto

Well then, maybe he should discontinue his World Youth days where the "youth" wash down their Holy Communion with beer and they dance in the aisles to tunes such as "Back to My Back Baby".

The best "sign" a true Christian can show to others of their faith is a life of loving, humble and faithful actions towards those around them.

Without those things, all the other "signs" are just trappings, trinkets and junk.

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing."

- Paul

(That passage always blows me away!)

TRUE. And wearing a symbol of one's faith is a good way to REMEMBER to act 'in good faith' and to represent what the symbol stands for in a more positive way. Just like dressing your children up in good clothes usually causes them to behave a bit better than if they were otherwise adorned.

Yeah, and the Pope also supports the United Nations International Tax, the International Court and is constantly wringing his hands over Israel's defense of its homeland from those rats that crawl around its border. I don't pay much attention to him. When I want an example from the Roman Catholic Church on how to live a spirit filled life, I look to someone like Mother Teresa.

In his homily, the Pope said the new world order he wanted "would be able to provide solutions to the problems of today ... based on the dignity of human beings, an integrated development of society, solidarity between rich and poor nations, and on the sharing of resources and the extraordinary results of scientific and technological progress."

I think Lenin and Marx promoted the same kind of bologna. Only they didn't really believe it, they just used the ideas of communism to enslave the masses. What is pathetic is that John Paul really believes this pipe dream.

Pope calls for a new world order
