8-year-old's first Holy Communion invalidated by Church

BRIELLE, N.J. -- An 8-year-old girl who suffers from a rare digestive disorder and cannot consume wheat has had her first Holy Communion declared invalid because the wafer contained none, violating Catholic doctrine. Now, Haley Waldman's mother is pushing the Diocese of Trenton and the Vatican to make an exception, saying the girl's condition _ celiac sprue disease _ should not exclude her from participating in the sacrament, in which Roman Catholics eat consecrated wheat-based wafers to commemorate the last supper of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion.

"I see she was offered the Precious Blood (wine) but refused. There is more to this woman's story."

I wonder how a eight year old girl would feel if they were told they couldn't have communion when all her friends have come of age or, according to Catholic doctrine, partake in our Lord Jesus? Would she be embarrassed? Sadden? Indeed there is more to this woman's story.

Lets everyone not have this particular argument. Right now.

The key is in the wheat, not the leavening. Suggestion for bible study: find all the references and symbolisms of wheat in the Bible. Do that and you will understand why it must be wheat.

The Byzantines use leavened bread in their liturgy to represent the risen Christ. We Romans use unleavened bread to represent the Passover Seder in which Christ is the Lamb. Both are valid, although using leavened bread in a Roman Mass would be illicit and vice versa for the Byzantines.

She CAN partake of our Lord Jesus. In fact, in the parish where I received First Holy Communion, the children would consider her "special" because she got to receive Blood, like the priest, when everyone else "just" got Body.

It is what is in your heart that determines that.

Where does it say that in the bible?

When Martin Luther had his little tiff, he decided to insert the word "alone" into St. Paul. Now that, in my opinion, is a "man made" Bible.

On a thread discussing communion, you reference Jehovah witness bible being the same as protestant bible, and then now discuss a specific from Martin Luther ... I'm getting a headache ... back to the communion discussion.

But since you 'digress', and want to talk about insertions don't forget all the 'books' that the RCC insisted St Jerome (over his objection) insert into the old testament, i.e. Torah ...

Don't worry, you're not alone. I dispense headaches like breath mints.

The Old Testament, as it is in the Roman Catholic Bible, is as it existed in Jesus' time. It was only after Christ that Jewish leadership decided to cast off certain books. If its good enough for Jesus to learn and study, its good enough for me.

Some of the people who are trashing the Catholic Church on this thread for their allegedly "pharisaical" rules might reflect that the Jews have, since time immemorial, insisted that "kosher for Passover" matzos contain two ingredients, and only two: wheat flour and water.

It is beyond all dispute that the bread used at the Last Supper would have been made from wheat flour and water.

This little girl can receive the whole Christ under the form of wine; that is Catholic dogma. Her mother evidently has issues with Catholicism per se.

We receive Christ fully, body and blood soul and divinity, under either species. Christ is living and in the living the body and blood are not separated. Christ comes to us under the accidental appearance of bread and wine, the appearance of separation is also an accident.

As children they may have some difficulty understanding that, but as an adult you should know it (assuming you are Catholic). I don't know why the other children must feel left out, at my first communion we were given both species.

Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that the Protestant obsessives here are arguing about the legitimacy of certain types of Communion, when most of them don't even believe in it?

And since when is a rice cake a type of "flour?" If you want to get completely away from flour, then it would be just as rational to consecrate a cucumber slice or a Reese's Piece.

When I got 1st Communion, we didn't get both species. Only adults were ever given Blood. I know that we get ALL of Chirst under both species. But you know how kids are. Anybody who gets to do what "adults" do is "cool" regardless of the theological points involved. All I'm saying is that the idea that the Church is being "mean" by subjecting this poor girl to the ridicule of her friends is a complete load.

Our Lord and Savior gives me every right

No. *Your* Jesus gives you that right. Our Jesus, the real one, has different ideas.

BTW, what do you care anyway? You don't believe in our Eucharist anyway, so waht does it matter? It's like me arguing which sect of Islam is the true one. It doesn't matter to me one way or another, just like it doesn't matter to me what the Protestants do.

The original article betrays a great degree of ignorance of Catholic doctrine on the part of the writer and the mother and almost everyone else quoted. Thus it is not surprising it generated a long thread full of ignorance and misunderstanding of the Catholic faith.

It seems to me that Protestants are always very interested in everything the Church has to say. No matter what it is, they are on the edge of their seats, ready to denounce it.

Yeah, it's pathetic actually. Too bad they apparently don't find anything in their religion that can actually occupy their time.

"Too bad they apparently don't find anything in their religion that can actually occupy their time."

Well, to be fair, they do!

Its just that as soon as they start arguing about God's sovereignty versus free will, or TULIPS from Amsterdam, they suddenly disappear into purgatory.

Its almost as if God has pre-destined that these holy mysteries shall not be dissected on the internet!

;)
