BRIELLE, N.J. -- An 8-year-old girl who suffers from a rare digestive disorder and cannot consume wheat has had her first Holy Communion declared invalid because the wafer contained none, violating Catholic doctrine. Now, Haley Waldman's mother is pushing the Diocese of Trenton and the Vatican to make an exception, saying the girl's condition _ celiac sprue disease _ should not exclude her from participating in the sacrament, in which Roman Catholics eat consecrated wheat-based wafers to commemorate the last supper of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion.

I wonder how a eight year old girl would feel if they were told they couldn't have communion when all her friends have come of age or, according to Catholic doctrine, partake in our Lord Jesus? Would she be embarrassed? Sadden? Indeed there is more to this woman's story.
She CAN partake of our Lord Jesus. In fact, in the parish where I received First Holy Communion, the children would consider her "special" because she got to receive Blood, like the priest, when everyone else "just" got Body.

It is beyond all dispute that the bread used at the Last Supper would have been made from wheat flour and water.
This little girl can receive the whole Christ under the form of wine; that is Catholic dogma. Her mother evidently has issues with Catholicism per se.

Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that the Protestant obsessives here are arguing about the legitimacy of certain types of Communion, when most of them don't even believe in it?
And since when is a rice cake a type of "flour?" If you want to get completely away from flour, then it would be just as rational to consecrate a cucumber slice or a Reese's Piece.
When I got 1st Communion, we didn't get both species. Only adults were ever given Blood. I know that we get ALL of Chirst under both species. But you know how kids are. Anybody who gets to do what "adults" do is "cool" regardless of the theological points involved. All I'm saying is that the idea that the Church is being "mean" by subjecting this poor girl to the ridicule of her friends is a complete load.
The original article betrays a great degree of ignorance of Catholic doctrine on the part of the writer and the mother and almost everyone else quoted. Thus it is not surprising it generated a long thread full of ignorance and misunderstanding of the Catholic faith.

It seems to me that Protestants are always very interested in everything the Church has to say. No matter what it is, they are on the edge of their seats, ready to denounce it.

Its just that as soon as they start arguing about God's sovereignty versus free will, or TULIPS from Amsterdam, they suddenly disappear into purgatory.
Its almost as if God has pre-destined that these holy mysteries shall not be dissected on the internet!
