Reuters PHOTO: "ROMAN CATHOLIC" John Kerry takes communion at AME Church [Is this kosher?]

Perhaps someone on the RELIGION forum can help us.

On tonight's Drudge thread there is some question as to the propriety of a ROMAN CATHOLIC taking communion in a NON-Catholic church.
See, for instance, my post 321:

To: tgslTakoma
The AP and Reuters stories said that he did take communion. Kerry attended Palm Sunday services, but not at a Catholic Church; he went to the Charles Street AME Church in Boston to take Communion.

(It's been a very long time since my Catholic school religion classes, but I seem to remember that it's a big no-no for a Catholic to take Communion in other than a Catholic church. Maybe that rule has changed...)

From Yahoo! NEWS photos:

He went to England to get himself Consecrated as a Bishop; however then (as now) the Church of England required an oath of loyalty to the Crown before Consecration (which as a newly independent American he was most unwilling to do). A favourably Englishman told him about the Scottish Episcopalians, and so he went to Scotland, and was finally Consecrated as Bishop by these Episcopalians (in Aberdeen, if I remember correctly). He carried the title back with him, and thus there is now the Episcopal Church of the United States of America (ECUSA) as the American component of the Anglican Communion.

I suppose at some point later on the Americans became reconciled with Canterbury? Perhaps I am thinking too Papist, but I would think that the Archbishop of Canterbury would need to approve of any bishops being made. And it sounds like they did an end-around on him.

Sorry, yes, forgot to mention that. During the 19th century we all 'kissed and made up'. By this time the C.ofE. had started to sent out Missionary Bishops to the Colonies, also the C.ofE. realised that the Scottish Non-Jurors were far more similar to the C.ofE. than was the Church of Scotland (which is presbyterian). There was still some friendly rivalry between the English and Americans (of course), partially because the C.ofE. is headed by the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, Primate and Metropolitan (that's all one person if you're wondering); whereas the ECUSA is headed by a mere Presiding Bishop.

It would appear to be so, but he may have some catholic convictions. There is no way we can know.

I got to thinking the real thing wrong with those pictures is that the uh heretical church still has an altar rail :-(.

I also got to thinking that maybe he was setting things up in the case he does get refused communion in a catholic church. Can't you see how that would play in the press? The picture of the rigid, uncharitable catholics refusing communion to a man who was so warmly and unconditionally accepted in a minority church? Imagine how that would play to the masses! It's a win-win situation!

I believe that the "Orthodox" to whom you refer are UNIATE Orthodox (Rumanian, Serbian, some Russkis)--NOT the Greek Orthodox.

It's a little tricky, and not surprising that there's mis-understanding, as the Big Kid on the Block 'Orthodox' religion is the Greek Orth...

This is strange indeed. I know of a woman who wanted to take communion in a Catholic church and she was denied because she wasn't a Catholic. I find it really odd that Kerry would even think for one second that he should be taking communion at this church. Sheeeeesh.

Looks like the doctor marked the spot for the bottox injection. Or maybe he just gave up Catholicism for Lent.

Kerry's a boob (and no Catholic).

But I have a question:

How come the AME congregants get to kneel for Communion and I don't??

Comes Easter Sunday would be most telling. I'm sure his flunkies are scrambling right now. Let's see where Kerry goes.

Just curious...I'm a Southern Baptist myself....and this is completely off topic, but since you head up the Catholic ping list than I imagine you are a good one to ask.

If I were to marry a girl who is Catholic, and we were to marry at my church instead of hers than would our marriage be recognized in her Church's eyes?

Just curious, I dated a Catholic once and she never really gave me a straight answer.

*on topic*

Kerry using ANY Church as a photo-op is blasphemous....same goes for ANY politician.

I was watching the United States Bishop's Conference when they decided it would be okay to "invite" Orthodox to partake of Communion in the RC Church.
The RC Bishop from Alaska begged his brother Bishops not to go there as it would greatly offend the Orthodox Bishops, and Orthodox Christians.
He said it was not proper for the US Bishops to issue a pronouncement that would encourage Orthodox Christians to be disobedient to their Orthodox Bishops.
Of course, charity and common sense fell on deaf ears, and when the US Bishops voted, it passed.
This must have been about six or eight years ago.

That is an interesting story. Oh, well... the RC do have a history as I understand it of causing some problems for the OC and maybe the other way round as well.

The RC wants to send the Pope to Russia but the OC says... no.

I guess it may be best for folks in one church to try not to antagonize the other... islamics are the common enemy and they are SURE NO FRIENDS to ANY Christian... whatever his stripe.

What say you?

Apostate! This is a deliberate and intentional act on his part to provoke a response from the Catholic Church.

And he doesn't care. To him this is a good photo-op.

Where do the Maronite catholics fall in regards to this? They never broke union with Rome but they are an Eastern Rite of the church, so what's the deal? Honest question from an RC, I truly don't know.

What about the inverse? Would your church recognize it if she's catholic and you're not? Again, no sarcasm here, just asking because I don't know.
