New archbishop calls on Catholics to deepen their faith

The procession into the Cathedral Basilica at the start of the Installation of the Most Reverend Raymond Leo Burke as Archbishop of St. Louis, right. He was followed by Joseph Naumann, administrator of the St. Louis Archdiocese.

In his first Mass as archbishop, Raymond Leo Burke invited St. Louis Catholics to renew their relationship with Christ through a deeper devotion to Jesus' love.

"(Burke) really tried to persuade people with his moral teaching but he will find that Missourians don't take kindly to being told what to think and what to do," said Bishop G. Wayne Smith, leader of the Episcopal diocese.**

Among the interfaith guests at the Mass was the Rev. Gerald Kieschnick, president of the 2.6 million-member Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, based in Kirkwood.

I think it was a mistake to not even acknowledge the presence of these people, even though Burke had invited them.

Interesting. I have read that in the eastern rites people receiving communion cross their arms. I also am interested if the catechumens were to go to an EME do they still get a blessing?

that's the most beautiful chasuble I've seen a (Roman) catholic wear in a long time.

Yes! I was most pleasantly surprised to see him wearing festive vestments. Desdemona knows the history on it so I've pinged her for more information.

Um, I've never seen those vestments before. I would imagine that they are of some sort of historical significance, though. All the Fleur de Lis kind of makes the statement that they are unique to this archdiocese.

Don't know who the artist is, though. I'd like to see more of his or her work.

No, Smith is not conservative, but he is also correct. We have a saying: "We don't care how they do it in New York." That goes for Wisconsin, too. I'm very afraid that Burke's style is really going to ruffle feathers.

Catholics from Viet Nam fold their arms across their chests. When I first saw the posture, it looked almost disrespectful to me, like the folks in the communion line were bored. I have come to see it as a beautiful gesture - they've nothing but themselves to bring to the Lord.

Noe that I think about it...there are so many vestments at the Cathedral, those may be really old ones. They still have a whole compliment of the pre-Vatican vestments and no two priests wear the same ones. One prefers the newer ones, one prefers the REALLY old ones, Naumann wore a set that actually fit him (he's 6'5"). I would imagine that the ones Burke wore yesterday are older. In style, they match the older set.

I noticed one person yesterday, approach for communion, cross their arms over their chest, bow their head and leave without receiving.

I used to do that when I was not properly disposed to receive the Blessed Sacrament. Sometimes I received the blessing I was seeking; sometimes it confused some priests and deacons and usually totally flummoxed the EEM's. I now remain on my knees in my pew.

About a half hour after the former bishop of La Crosse, Wis., was installed, Burke called on St. Louis Catholics to strengthen their faith through devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In his half-hour homily, Burke urged Catholics to place an image of Jesus with his exposed heart in their homes and their workplaces, and to attend daily Mass and make frequent visits to the Eucharist in area parishes. He reminded them that five years ago to the day, Pope John Paul II had preached to them on the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the papal Mass in St. Louis. "The Holy Father came to St. Louis to teach us how to live more fully in Christ," Burke said. "The Holy Mass is the most perfect encounter which we have with Christ on this Earth, where we are able to make contact with the very wellspring of grace."

He seems to understand that the battle against organized evil, in which we find ourselves in now, requires holiness, deep personal conversion, and prayer. It will strengthen families to make their homes centers of holiness under the mercy of Christ. We extend our prayers to the new Archbishop. He will be a great leader for the Church. The best strategy against the culture of death is holiness. This is a breath of fresh for the Church. Burke should take his message to front stage at the USCCB conferences. Should prove VERY interesting. Exciting times.

let's see, not only has wayne smith voted the wrong way on almost every item to come up in the ecusa house of bishops, but he also uses "in the name of the creator, redeemer, and sanctifier" rather than "in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". does that give you a pretty good idea of his 'theology'?

Rev. Kieschnick may have preferred to remain as low key as possible since his mere presence there would have been seen by some old-timer Lutherans as a problem.

(oh and by the way, my wife and I actually do live right on the edge of his diocese) - a couple of times I've toyed with the idea of letting it slip to the local ecusa priest what it is I do as a freeper, but I finally decided it was more for my ego's sake than to simply shake up the local ecusa power structure, so I didn't do it...

actually it seems to be a rather shallow and uncertain place. The one homily of his which I sat through was mostly nicey nice stuff and when he did touch at all on Scripture there appeared to be effective understanding thereof.
