Charlotte, N.C.(AP)-Sixty-two alleged members of Charlotte-area gangs were arrested Tuesday in an effort to rid the city of a growing gang problem that has caused the deaths of 11 people over the past 2 1/2 years, federal officials said.
"We will not passively accept the encroachment of gangs and the taking over of our neighborhoods," U.S.Attorney Bob Conrad said at a news conference.
Of those detained in "Operation Fed Up," 53 were being held on immigration charges and will have deportation hearings, Conrad said. Six suspects were arrested and released pending a hearing to determine their immigration status.
The other three were being held on federal criminal charges, including illegal possession of firearms and returning to the United States after being deported.
City and federal officers were involved in the early-morning sweep, which targeted members of Latino street gangs.
"We did not solve the gang problem today, and I don't want to misrepresent that, but this was a strong, proactive strike," said Ken Burkhart, a group supervisor with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have documented about 800 gang members in the city.
Fifteen members of Mara Salvatrucha 13, which police say is the city's most violent gang, have been charged with murder since April, including seven in the death of 19-year-old Isai Alexander Euceda. He was killed during a shootout involving at least 17 people in a part April 13.
The shooting, police said, was part of a dispute between Salvadoran and Honduran members over leadership of the gang.
Thanks. I guess I hadn't thought of that. I was just ammazed that in a state of 12 million or so, so many of the top 10 would be from one ethnic group.
But, hey, it's always nice to have something to look forward to!(grin)
Especially in the SW USA, many are native born and aren't immigrants at all --- but when you look at states like New Mexico, those aren't the people who tend to join gangs, the gangs are coming in from Mexico and Central America.
Yep, the AARG is in my future...(Pronounced Aaaaaaarrrrggghhhh!)
American Association of Retired Gangsters.
Like now, they go in a store and get everything free with their Golden Stick-Up Card!
We need a "Gang Banger Tag" on our hunting licenses, along with the Deer, Bear, and Turkey tags.
Everyone should be allowed, no, encouraged, to pop a gang banger every year and attach the official state toe tag thereto.
How do you tell a gang banger I hear you ask?
Anyone with two of these three:
jailhouse tattoos,
a do rag on their head,
Their pants riding so low their underwear shows, or would if they were wearing any,
is a gang banger or close enough for government work.

Yesterday, October 2, the full Senate Judiciary Committee came close to approving S. 1545, which would repeal the current federal law that bans states from granting in-state tuition for illegal aliens. Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced this legislation, the Development, Relief, and Education for Minors (DREAM) Act. Fortunately, Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) raised objections to the bill and was able to temporarily stop the committee from moving forward. But the bill will be brought back up for committee consideration the week of October 13 (after next weeks congressional recess). The bill is expected to easily pass the Senate once it is passed by the committee
Just for the record so that we all know how Republicans are 'helping' with the problem. Hmmmm, wonder how our illustrious 'conservative' Senator will vote on bill S 1545, especially considering this event happened? Probably she'll call for NC taxpayers to embrace the stupid idea Carolina has of footing the bill for the poor students to go to college for free.
Oh wait a minute, this happened in North Carolina. Giddy doesn't know how to get back here since the voters of NC put her in Washington. So she probably doesn't even know this happened. Could one of the Giddy faithful please call your Senator and tell her about this? Not like it would make a bit of difference...
What? No trial?
And what would be the guidelines for considering someone a gang member and who gets to make that determination? Are you a gang member? Would an anonymous tip be enough? Or what exactly?
53 eh? A microscopic but correct start.
If they are guilty of violent crimes, they should be executed not deported. Otherwise they'll just prey on more victims, probably here again eventually.
Will I be paying for your sorry behind after you're finally placed behind bars?
