This is just common sense. My family has had emergency plans in place since the cold war (before I was born), and my kids are being taught the same things today. If anything, these recommendations don't go far enough. But more importantly, Why do we need a Department of Homeland Security to waste tax money on this, while leaving our borders wide open?

On another note, get a load of this:

What kind of idiot is this Aviv guy anyway? In the event of a disaster, lets say you are required for whatever reason, more than likely the weather, to stay in your car, office, or home without utilities for any length of time, this kit makes perfect sense! Ask anyone that has been stranded anywhere for any length of time and I can guarantee they would have wanted a kit with them.

IMHO knowing that I would have at least 3 days worth of food and water would probably cut the tendency to panic in half.

We just had a Red Cross presentation about this at work the other day. What really bothered me is that only 2 of us showed up! And both of us already are pretty well aware of what's needed in a emergency, so they were sort of "preachin' to the choir".

I'm putting together a bag for my parents (who live outside of NYC) as part of their Christmas present. I was down there for a visit during the blackout in August and they didn't have any extra water or even batteries for the radio! We ended up stealing batteries from my nephews toys.
I was appalled - after living through 9/11 (and losing neighbors to it) and the anthrax attacks you'd think they'd have put at least some batteries aside.

I have plenty of emergency supplies in our home.

I've often pondered the practicality of evacuation in a "short notice" emergency.

A hurricane is one thing, evacuating in advance to escape an oncoming disaster. But in a terrorist attack, advising people to evacuate via car in a major metropolitan area, will just leave folks more vulnerable, IMHO.

Look at Manhattan during the blackout, you sit in your car for hours to inch along at a snails pace.

Can somebody explain to me the logic of evacuation via car in a metro area?

In other news today, the DHS threat level status indicator has been upgraded to RED. Across the country millions of people are asking each other, "Exactly what the f*ck does RED mean?" We now return you to the laugh already in progress.

If any of you needs the useless Dept. of Homeland Security to tell them how to prepare their families for the unexpected, get yourself a roll of duct tape and hang yourself with it. Do us all a favor and take yourself out of the gene pool.

Another giant, useless, expensive bureaucracy spending our money on busy-work to make themselves look as if we need them.

The best thing the Dept. of "Homeland" Security can do for America and Americans is shut their doors for good.

I have an emergency bag...but the bad news is that the most likely "emergency" will be a tornado, and if it hits, both the bag and the house will probably blow away...


My son was caught at relatives in North Carolina during a hurricane evacuation, and had to help evacuate his sick father in law, so yes, bags would come in handy for hurricanes, floods, and terrorism.

Check out Equipped to Survive. Lots of instructions and advice on survival kits for all uses. I've met the owner - he's a pilot, which got him into this, I think.

This reminds me of the idiotic "Duck and Cover" exercises school children were taught during the cold war, and the backyard "bomb shelters" hyped at that time. As if school desks and family shelters would offer protection against a hydrogen bomb blast.

The times, the threats, and the enemy have changed, but the government mentality plows along as it always has.

Aviv also pointed out that having a flashlight or a granola bar won't help victims of a chemical or biological attack.

I am so tired of this type of argument. SDI would do no good against a plane crashing into a building. A standing army doesn't help if the Soviets launch a missle at us.

This is like saying I shouldn't bother to lock my doors because someone can come in my window.

This is my sentiment exactly but I think by calling the kits "go bags" it gives the impression that it would be something you would grab as you were out the door, i.e. in an evacuation after a terrorist attack.

Like I said, hurricane's are one thing, terrorism entirely different.

My husband works for local government and would have to be in a different location froms us on the Emergency Management Team, but I've always told him, even if they tell us to evacuate, you'll find us right here at home because there's no way I'm getting on the roads in an emergency situation.

I've adopted that phrase from the book of Esther, "If I perish, I perish." I'll prepare for what I can prepare for, but I won't follow some hairbrained scheme or evacuation plan that has never been tested.
