The Dead who Dared
By
James Bredin
Do we have the time, the energy and the resolve?
The manpower to fix problems that cannot be solved,
Afghanistan will be the same in ten years time,
Despite all those dead Canadians killed in the line.
Now Ottawa admits that many more will soon die,
In cheap jeeps and helicopters that fall out of the sky,
Peacekeepers prancing proudly over there and so brave,
Guiding outdated rusty cheap gear to the grave.
Our stupid politicians will boast in New York,
Bout soft power in UN announcements by a dork,
And the media will manage to hype the whole thing,
And the generals will justify flying on one wing.
And no one will dare to ask is our democracy dead?
How many should die for the policy of the feds?
Should we ask for a referendum to get them all back?
But referendums are not allowed for those dead in a sack.
Theres too much pride here to ever admit a mistake,
As they count the dead soldiers coming home to their wake,
Is there anything we can do to change things around?
Cause certainly in Afghanistan the answers wont be found.

I guess no soldiers would ever die, nor would war ever be necessary if we just surrendered...

From your homepage:
"This old retired Canadian believes that he is among a group of people who are the most overtaxed people in the history of the world. He believes that the tax and spend socialists in the Canadian government are the cause of the Canadian dollar being almost down to sixty cents. He believes that the amalgamation of Canada and the US would help some of these ongoing problems. He believes that Canada should pull out of the UN."
Well, if a majority of Canadians agree with this poem, they wouldn't want to amalgamate with the U.S. Western Canada sounds more conservative, we have some fine Albertan Freepers. But there's way you should wish Quebec on the U.S., and why Canadians don't stop bending over for Quebec, just tell them to secede, and get rid of those losers is beyond me. Sure, it would split the country up geographically, but think what you would gain.

Bad poetry, to be sure. But spoken like a true coward. I doubt that "all" Canadians share this coward's opinion.

Yeah, you're right. As an English major I gotta say the poetry is terrible.
Canada has the lowest defense spending (as a percent of their GDP) of almost any Western country -- certainly they are at the bottom of the NATO countries. For this they should be ashamed. If the author is trying to point out the problems of such paltry spending, then he's got a good point and I'll cut him some slack for his verse.

The poetry is a disaster. One word: meter. The guy should learn what that is before trying to rhyme.
However -- I think those Freepers that are bagging on his attitude, need to check out what he is really saying in the poem. If it has a message, it's that Canada's feckless pursuit of UN-sponsored fun and games is out of balance with Canada's disassembly of the once-significant Canadian military. It is calling, as far as I can tell, for a stronger military but less engagement abroad. I wouldn't call that cowardly.
I don't happen to agree with the fellow, I think isolationism is futile for lands great (USA) and small (Canada). But I think he deserves more consideration than the rubbishing y'all are giving him.

me thinks poetry in canada, really sucks, eh?
with timing and rhymes, that lead all astray.
they quibble and whine like the hosers they are.
no wonder their prime minister seems so bizarre.
they think they are free like their neighbors below,
but without any guns, their just subjects, you know.
for all of their strife, i have one small conniption,
i gotta drive way too far, to fill my prescription.

Canada has the lowest defense spending (as a percent of their GDP) of almost any Western country -- certainly they are at the bottom of the NATO countries. Why do they need to spend money on defense? During the cold war when soviet missles were targeted at both our countries, they only had to look overhead to see US aircraft paid for by US taxpayers protecting their country. They only had to look out to sea to see the US flag on the ships that were protecting their socialist utopia. I'm confident that if there were attacked by terrorists now we would gladly and unselfishly rush to their aid. I want to like Canadians, I know Canadians that aren't socialists and I respect them, but I'm sick and tired of the hateful crap that comes from their lousy government and their lousy left wing tripe spewing media all the time directed at us.

Hang yourself, brave Crillon. We fought at Arques, and you were not there.

to Crillon after a great victory, appeared in a note to Voltaire's "Henriade", VIII, 109
