And here I thought I had expensive tastes. -:) All the same, the local gun store I frequent has a Wilson CQB in the display case. They know me there. I've bought a lot of guns from them. But I make a point of not bothering the sales people when I'm not seriously ready to buy.

Last week, I had them take out the Wilson. What a thing of beauty. And there's no way I can justify such a purchase, given my circumstances, which you know all too well. But then, if the clock is ticking on my list California auto pistol purchases, how can I not buy it?

I shot a Wilson Custom Tactical Super Grade last time I went up to the range (ran into a Wilson dealer). Sweeeeeet!

It was nearly a religious experience. Sadly, I don't have $3500 for a handgun. Fortunately, they make models that us normal mortals can afford (sort of) :o)

I still believe that this rifle is the best ever. I would like to see a down-sized version in the 5.56 MM (.223 Caliber) also built for the military.

That would be a Ruger Mini-14. Or more properly an AC-556, the select fire version. (seen in absurdity as the favored spray and pray weapon on the old "A-Team" TV series). Perhaps with a little heavier barrell for better accuracy?

I believe the Germans have a 7.62 version of the G-36. That was the G-3, which came in several variants and was based on the CETME, designed in Spain by German engineers, who then took the design to H&K (legally). It foremd the basis for many H&K weapons, such as the MP-5, for example.

I have a "parts" gun contructed on a new receiver that was once (mostly) a Portuguese G-3, (although some interal parts do say H&K on them.

That said, many think the various versions of the FAL were better than the G-3. All three are good guns, (M-14, G-3, FAL).

This experience does not make him in any way an expert on the kind of battle rifle our troops should be issued for mounted and dismounted combat ops in middle eastern deserts.

I would think the longer range of the 7.62X51 would be even more usefull in open dessert than in a jungle. The only real downside is the reduced number of rounds that can be carried (as well as a heavier rifle to begin with), but for mounted combat, that is sort of an old dragoon, riding into battle, but fighting dismounted, that would be less of a factor than on a long range patrol in the jungle, or even mountains.

The M14 is an awesome system. I packed a Mk4 in Somalia and was not satisfied with its performance. I know that many have wet dreams for a 6mm military cartidge, but in my estimation, something along the lines of a .250 Savage, or better yet, a .308 necked to .257 would be ideal...a 25-08 not subject to the pressure limitations of the .250 Savage and its lever action downloadings. Chambered in a Mk4 or a collapsible FAL it would, in my estimation, be the ideal system. I know there are those here with far more combat experience than me. As such, I remain interested in all input....

Of course there is. It's "its. That's just as much a possesive as "his", "hers", "yours" or "mine". It's just not a contraction, requireing an apostrohe, but rather a possesive pronoun. :)

That guy was Eaker! However he seemed OK a couple of weeks ago in San Antonio, although the scars still showed. (I bought a one year membership at that range today.. and fired a couple of hundred rounds of .45 ACP too)

you know I have to maintain minis in my job, and I have come to hate those gas block screws. I always thought there was a better way to retain the gas block than those screws, which if not staked or "frozen" in place with permatex will back out. If not put in just perfect, they will invariably back out, and the accuracy goes to sh!t. Even if they are put in EXACTLY according to armorers specs , they still sometimes come out. Somebody could make a mint coming up with a barrel band/ gas block retrofit for the mini.

I'm not sure "tough" is the only adjective I'd use for someone banging away with a piece of catridge case in his breastbone. :)

Exactly! But if a new weapon is to be issued, probably we should look at new calibers in the 6.5 to 7mm range.

I figured that out shortly after hitting "post". I was thinking of the 5.56mm HK-33/53, which is pretty much a scaled down G-3/HK-91. (Or a scaled up MP-5, I suppose)

LOL........Yeah they make great tent stakes........ I have a few investment pieces in the safe . Just never liked em. Gimme a HK21 or an MP5SDA3 any day for sheer enjoyment and fun !

My working rifle is an TRW laden M1A these days.

It's another case where I don't want to be right when I say the Mini definitely has it's problems. If they were going to copy the M-1 carbine, the least they could have done is copy all of it including the barrel band.

Someone should offer a heavy barrel and gas block combination instead of those silly heavy barrels that neck down to fit the old block.

The other weapon we had on board that everyone liked was the M-60 Machine gun.

While the M60 can be modified into a decent GPMG, the VN era guns were often despised. Oddly, this fella's adored M60 is no longer in the Army inventory, replaced by the FN MAG M240B.

Just what we needed though, another tactical yahoo writing about how cool the M14 and M1911 are, while simultaneously bashing the most successful US service rifle IN HISTORY. How novel.

This should be followed closely by an article on how reliable Glocks are.

Define "successful". I would give that honor to the M-1 Garand, in terms of numbers built/issued and enemy killed, but that's IMHO. (and I've never even fired one!)

Personally, I think a full up m14 would make sense for My job (corrections) . Larger caliber, more durable, better takedown qualities. But, unfortunately most correctional employees are not weapons enthusiasts, so weapons choices are of the lowest common denominator, keep -it -simple-stupid type.
