Dick Gephardt's disgraceful rhetoric underscores perfectly why Washington politicians rarely become Presidents. As Retired General H. Hugh Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on 9/11, has said, "Sometimes people in a position of power lose perspective on right and wrong."
Unfortunately, Congressman Gephardt is one of those who has lost perspective on right vs. wrong. He is so intent on winning the Democratic primary, that he has forgotten the effect his words have, not just on those serving overseas, but on our enemies as well. It is one thing for the Congressman to disagree with President Bush's stance on national security, it is quite another to repeatedly call the President a "miserable failure."
Ironically, these words are not even original. Tom Daschle used a similar phrase in March of this year when he commented that "this president failed so miserably at diplomacy that we're now forced to war." Perhaps Daschle should receive royalties for Gephardt's use of his material. Regardless, both comments are in poor taste and so, Congressman Gephardt's words and actions have served only to reinforce the notion in the minds of Americans that most Washington insiders are just TOO political to make good Presidents.
In this time of national crisis, Americans should send a clear message to any politican who puts politics before people... Its time to retire Gephardt! Send him home and lets find someone who will serve with dignity!
