it's not much of an exaggeration to say that Bush would like to roll back the federal government to something resembling its pre-New Deal state

There is a pretty large contingent of conservatives - my husband included - who think Dubya is a Country Club Republican, good at spending other people's money.

Me, I love him. He's not perfect but it isn't possible for a politician to be perfect.

Hatred is active, and envy passive dislike; there is but one step from envy to hate. Goethe.

"He reminds me of a certain type I knew in high school--the kid who was given a fancy sports car for his sixteenth birthday and believed that he had somehow earned it. I hate the way he walks--shoulders flexed, elbows splayed out from his sides like a teenage boy feigning machismo."

Sounds to me like Mr. Chait here hasn't gotten over being beat up in high school.

I stopped after this:

"A second, more crucial difference is that Bush is a far more radical president than Clinton was. From a purely ideological standpoint, then, liberal hatred of Bush makes more sense than conservatives' Clinton fixation. Clinton offended liberals time and again, embracing welfare reform, tax cuts, and free trade, and nominating judicial moderates. When budget surpluses first appeared, he stunned the left by reducing the national debt rather than pushing for more spending. Bush, on the other hand, has developed into a truly radical president."

Right. Bush has alienated true main-stream conservatives by not fighting for good judges, adopting Kennedy's Federal education bureaucracy, signing CFR, supporting steel tarriffs, vowing to sign an extension of a rifle ban, doing nothing about rampant pork, growing government spending like crazy, implementing scary "security" measures that empower future tyrants. What else am I forgtetting?

Bush makes an ordinary conservative wonder how Gore would have much more different, except that a Republican Senate would have slowed down Gore's big government wishes.

I have to get it off my chest. I hate Vermont Gov. Howard BRUSH Dean III for precisely the same reason. Imagine that.

His closing line. I often use the same line right before I flush. I leave it to the reader to draw a conclusion.

Why is their hate speech okay, even when they admit that it's hate speech?

Pathetic! The Clintons lowered the bar so far that the left's entire goal is to see to it that this President is made to look lower than the Clintons and their band of 40 thieves and liars. They are more incited by the fact that George Bush, not Bill Clinton, was president when the WTC was knocked down and he shone like the star he was. Made the 'toons look sad and guilty. He has done the only thing that could be done and retain credibility in the world. He is continuing to do the right thing. Damn, they just hate it when the right thing is done! Brings out all that hate when they can't tarnish him. Ole Teddy appears demented. I just love the implosion and the endless whining.

Hatred, tarted up as intellectualism, is still hatred. The Left hates George Bush because it fears his moral clarity. When they attack him as "dumb" or "simplistic" or "limited", their real objection is that he is sure. And what he is sure of is that Good and Evil exist in this world, and that in the struggle between these great forces, there are no shades of gray, no ambiguity, no moral middle ground. Good must triumph if God's will is to be done. And he is certain that the United States is firmly on the side of Good - warts and all, our imperfections aside - we are the last best hope of Mankind. That, my friends, is what drives liberals like this New Republic Fool stark, raving mad. Our President believes in God, and that God is with us and within us. Yet he clearly also knows and has expressed that he is a secular - not a religious - leader whose purpose is to serve the American people. Today's Left simply cannot accept that an expressly observant and religious person who intentionally makes moral distinctions is qualified to govern as diverse a Nation as ours. It infuriates them to no end that George Bush has succeeded in this regard. No matter what policy differences I have or others may have with him, no one- and I mean no one - can reasonably deny that Mr. Bush is a good and decent man wholly undeserving of the calumny directed toward him by those whose moral icons include such as Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy.

The article was too long. A good editor could have summed it up in a few paragraphs. Seemed self-indulgent and long-winded.

There. That feels better.

I have been very critical of Bush's foreign policy on this site but I don't hate him. In fact- I rather like him as a person.

But I did hate Clinton. Not because he was a liberal or his politics. His presidency was one of the most non ideological this country has ever had. I hated Clinton not because of his "beliefs"- he had and has none and never did- but becasue he was a dangerous sociopath who ruled for his own personal benefit. He was a criminal. And it was obvious. It was obvious even to the lying liberals who supported him in the press. We are going to have years of "revelations" to look forward to about Clinton just as we still do about JFK.

I don't understand the Left's hatred of Bush. While the right had concrete and real examples of Clinton's crimes to actually cite the Left cites nothing specific about Bush. They just hate him because he is a Republican.

I have friends who have a viscerally hostile reaction to the sound of his voice or describe his existence as a constant oppressive force in their daily psyche.

Really? That was my life for 8 years under Clinton- but at least I had hundreds of real reasons to hate.
