"He reminds me of a certain type I knew in high school--the kid who was given a fancy sports car for his sixteenth birthday and believed that he had somehow earned it. I hate the way he walks--shoulders flexed, elbows splayed out from his sides like a teenage boy feigning machismo." Sounds to me like Mr. Chait here hasn't gotten over being beat up in high school.

When I went to high school - the mid 70's in Staunton, Virginia - I am sure there might have been some kids whose dad bought him or her a new car. However, the majority of the kids - myself included - save money up and purchased a vehicle several years old. Myself - I had a 1966 Chevy Impala, four door hard-top convertible which was stolen in DC back in January 1976. I wish today I had the VIN just to see if it is out there somewhere. Anyway, I see more of today's kids getting new cars than when I went to school.
