...Outer bands of Hurricane Isabel moving onshore...weather should gradually worsen...

A Hurricane Warning remains in effect from Cape Fear North Carolina to Chincoteague Virginia...including Pamlico and Albemarle sounds...and the Chesapeake Bay south of Smith Point. A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area...generally within 24 hours.

All preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion in the Hurricane Warning area.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect south of Cape Fear to South Santee River South Carolina...and north of Chincoteague to Sandy Hook New Jersey...including Delaware Bay. A Tropical Storm Warning also remains in effect for the Chesapeake Bay from Smith Point northward...and for the tidal Potomac.

At 11 PM EDT...0300z...the center of Hurricane Isabel was located by an Air Force reconnaissance aircraft near latitude 31.9 north... longitude 73.9 west or about 250 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras North Carolina.

Isabel is moving toward the north-northwest near 13 mph. A turn to the northwest with an increase in forward speed is expected prior to landfall. On the forecast track...the center of Isabel is expected to make landfall in eastern North Carolina during the day Thursday. However...conditions will deteriorate over a large area well before the center reaches the coast. Tropical storm conditions are already spreading across the coastline.

Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph...with higher gusts. A slight increase in strength is possible prior to landfall.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 315 miles. A buoy located west of the hurricane recently reported wind gusts to 74 mph and 32 foot waves.

An Air Force hurricane hunter plane recently reported a minimum central pressure of 956 mb...28.23 inches.

Storm surge flooding of 7 to 11 feet above normal tide levels... along with extremely large and dangerous battering waves...is expected near and to the north of where the center crosses the coast. Storm surge flooding of 4 to 8 ft above normal tide levels is expected in Chesapeake Bay and the tidal portions of adjacent rivers.

Storm total rainfalls of 6 to 10 inches...with locally higher amounts...are likely in association with Isabel.

There is a threat of isolated tornadoes over eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia on Thursday.

Repeating the 11 PM EDT position...31.9 N... 73.9 W. Movement toward...north-northwest near 13 mph. Maximum sustained winds...105 mph. Minimum central pressure... 956 mb.

My first husband was from New Hampshire; I don't see how you all stand all that snow!

As for earthquakes and tornados......yowzer. Warn me, please!

It's really scary how quickly the water rises in these little streams sometimes. Our little creek is usually well behaved, but it turns into a raging torrent during these heavy rains. It scares me plenty.

My husband gets restless during these storms. He just went driving an hour or so ago to see what's happening around the area. Towards the end of Floyd or Allison, he decided to take us for a drive to look around. We quickly learned that the creeks weren't finished with the storm and had a heck of a time getting back home. It seemed like everywhere we turned, the water had risen in the low-lying areas and blocked our route. We drove a lot of miles trying to get home the couple of miles as the crow flies. We don't even have the excuse of coming from Texas. My husband grew up in this house!

The last 45 minutes or so we've had our share of sideways rain.

when it gets scary, I always try to think how I'd react if I wasn't responsible for my family... and in many cases, I think... heck, this is kinda exciting.

about that point, I take the kids out back under the carport and we watch the thunderheads roll by together. Adversity is a great binding and strengthening agent for families... and not to be feared when you, as a parent, can be strong for them enough for them to experience the real circumstance in relative security.

Stay Safe!

Amen---I will NEVER forget the Loma Prieta earthquake! Unfortunately those of us in California do not have a warning before our earthquakes! The entire ground, structure, and everything in it shakes and bounces while you just try to hang on and pick up the pieces after it's over. ( but you still have after-shocks that go on for EVER).

I am anxious about our friends.

They are probably fine. There have been 100+ power flickers here from brown outs to a few seconds. I'm in NW VA, power from PA and WV so probably doing better than most. It's hard to stay online even with UPS. Also my phone;s been dead for hours.

Actually, the snow is much easier to deal with here than it was in Texas....... here, you go to bed and the road is plowed in the morning...... we had to plow our sidewalk and driveway - and yea, when you have a ton of snow that is difficult - but the roads are clean and dry within hours...... whereas in Texas there was no equipment to clean the roads so you had two days of ice......

As for tornados - I've been through enough to last a lifetime.... hope never to do that again!

Oh I know! It was completely stupid.......

Awww, I would never call you that.

But now that you mention it....ahem..

;-)

It really does bear saying right now of all times:

Do NOT drive through water that is running over the road!

Your life is not worth it!

Me too. Lived most of my life in Nebraska or Iowa. They are fearsome.

The flooding in Chester County early this week was incredible.......... I hope they get past this without more flooding, but that seems unlikely.........

Earthquakes would have to be so scary...... you are right - even though a tornado only gives a small warning, like a bad thunderstorm, you get NO warning with a quake..........

Anyone who says they are not "afraid" of tornados, has not experienced a large one........

Yes, Chester County has had a bad time of it. I think they're also getting more rain today than we are up our way. I have some friends in Chadd's Ford I'm concerned about.

No kidding. I've been in several. The worst was the May 1974 SW Omaha tornado. It had three tails and plowed through about 15 miles of city several blocks wide. The devastation was incredible, but thank God only 3 people lost their lives. It happened during the late afternoon when everyone was paying attention to the news reports--which I'm sure saved hundreds of lives at least.
