I have a spyware/virus/worm/whoknowswhat on my home pc that cannot be found by my anti-virus (norton) or any other I have found on the internet thus far. Adaware deos not remove it either.

It's a popup on my hard drive that tries to get me to go to a variety of websites where, no doubt, even greater mischeif will occur. It's making me crazy.

Adaware puts a trojan on your system. Don't like it....

Care to elaborate on this statement? Blackbird.

To what site does the popup try to send you? I'll see if I can find a way of removing it.

Rumour has it that another virus is coming down the road soon, much like the last Blaster.

I don't have an opinion on McAfee, but ZoneAlarm is tough to beat for free.

When you first booted your machine, or installed Windows on either an update, or fresh install; you were asked about allowing Windows to automatically update the OS. There is a reason for this. If you had done this, you wouldn't be affected by the MSBlaster or the hordes of other virus's making the rounds. If you have not YET done this, do it now.

I can think of no greater security hole than allowing an operating system to be altered without direct user control. I have never met an IT manager who permits this practice.

I downloaded adaware from lavasoft, and got a trojan called chechen on my hard drive. I discovered it by running a virus scan.

Thanks, It tries to send me a variety. I'll get the sites and let you know after I get home if you don't mind. I don't have the sites here.

If you don't have a firewall, you can get popup messages that use your Widows message service. this is not the same as instant messenger and has nothing to do with your browser. The popups are harmless, but they can't be stopped with anything but a firewall. I find ZoneAlarm (free version, not the trial) works well and is easy to use.

Sounds like Lavasoft is aware of the problem and actively working to fix it.

Sorry, I checked. You're right. I downloaded the hacked copy of ad-aware a few years ago before I was a little less savvy. This is from Lavasoft: It has come to our attention that there may be a new virus and/or Trojan masquerading as a legitimate Ad-aware download. This file or software is called aware.exe or some variation of this. We have also been informed that there may be someone out there who is actively using pop ups that seem as though they are from LavaSoft. Please be sure to only download our products from the official mirror sites listed on our downloads page:

For some reason, one of my machines has an aversion to Netscape 7. I have not tried it on my others. I do have Mozilla, which is about the same (without all the extra crap) and it works beautifully.
