Dearest Canteen,
I will not be checking in too much tomorrow as I am taking Matthew (the almost 4 year old) to our local fair.
In honor of September 11th, the fair is having a SALUTE TO THE MILITARY day.
I thought it would be a good way to show the little one some good people honoring his dad!
I will be keeping the date in my mind all day and hope that we all can remember, always, that freedom is indeed not free!
Have a GREAT sports day (my Mariners are not doing so well)!
I do so appreciate you all!
(Believe it or not, this little thing took me over an hour! But I'm geting better!)
~~~~~~Goodnight all!~~~~~~
Thanks to all of you
who have made this a
relaxing and enjoyable
place to take a break.
We Sincerely appreciate it!
We Will Never Forget!
Five Marines and a Navy hospital corpsman
raise the flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima,
using a piece of Japanese pipe as a mast,
on 23 Feb. 1945.
Three of the flag raisers were later killed
as the fighting raged on.
The Iwo Jima flag raising photo and subsequent
statue, came to symbolize being a Marine.
Below is a little known tribute to September 11th.
It is not as professional as some but
I found it to be truly touching
HEY - SPORTS AND 9-11 TOGETHER!
Sports World Commemorates September 11
9/11/2003 4:10:42 PM
JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (Ticker) - On the two-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, several teams in the sports world have plans to pay tribute to those lost and others fighting for freedom across the world.
A pair of games take place in the New York metropolitan area, including a Major League Baseball matchup between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers.
At Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, there will be a full color guard and a moment of silence before the 7:05 p.m. EDT start. A wreath also will be placed at the 9/11 monument in the famed ballpark's Monument Park.
Less than 20 miles away in Jersey City, Saint Peters hosts Marist in a collee football game at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Cochrane Stadium, with the blue "Tribute of Light
where the World Trade Center in Manhattan once stood as the backdrop.
"The events of 9/11 will never stray far from our minds, especially for those in the metropolitan area," Saint Peter's athletic director Bill Stein said.
"It is very important for us to remember the day and those who lost their lives and to pay tribute to uniformed safety personnel who protect us everyday at great personal risk.
Elsewhere in the United States, baseball's Atlanta Braves are planning several ceremonies before their game with the Philadelphia Phillies at Turner Field, including a video tribute, a 21-gun salute and a flyover by Blackhawk helicopters.
There was a moment of silece in a handful of afternoon games in the majors, including the matchup between the Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals, where the moving post-9/11 speech of late broadcaster Jack Buck was replayed at Busch Stadium.
At Milwaukee's Miller Park, the Brewers had an MLB logo painted on the field and covered with a ribbon. At U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, the cast of "Mamma Mia" sang the national anthem and a Navy officer presented a flag from the site of the WTC.
Also in college football, the game between Utah and California at Rice-Eccles Stadium will feature an F-16 flyover, and a Tennessee Martin English instructor will read an original essay as part of a "Salute to America" at halftime of the school's game against East Tennessee State.
In Little Rock, Arkansas, Central Arkansas and Arkansas Pine Bluff begin the annual Capital City Classic series at War Memorial Stadium.
"The Capital City Classic is for everyone," organizers of the four-game series said on its Web site. "Whether or not you are a fan of UCA or UAPB, the event is an opportunity for uniformed service people to be recognized and for civilians to honor them for their sacrifices.
The PGA Tour's John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois had a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. CDT - the time the first plane hit one of the towers at the World Trade Center. Each flagstick at the TPC at Deere Run is adorned with an American flag.
