The open-mouthed kisses between aging pop star Madonna and 15th-minute celebrity clingers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, broadcast on MTV last week, received widespread media attention. The Sapphic spectacle was rightly condemned as vulgar, cynical and desperately pathetic.

But the commentariat missed the real horror.

Next week, she'll launch a line of children's books — five "morality tales" — to be hawked on Amazon.com, at GapKids stores, in more than 30 languages and in more than 100 countries. Explaining her noble motive for delving into kiddie lit, she condemned the "vapid and vacant" stories she was reading to her children. "There were, like, no lessons. ... There's, like, no books about anything."

Ah yes, "Madonna Morality Tales" coming your way soon. Watch for:

"Little Susy and the Ambiguous Sex Offender"

"Little Tommy wants to dress like Mommy"

"Father McGuire wears lipstick"

"Touch me there and other Pre-Teen games"

"Little Cindy becomes a Wiccan"

...The Sapphic spectacle was rightly condemned as vulgar, cynical and desperately pathetic...

Oh, come on. The kisses were short and no big deal. Done for the surprise more than the shock. The whole number was well-done - the correography couldn't have been tamer for the most part.

...But the commentariat missed the real horror...

Horror? what horror?

...Up on stage for the raunchy performance of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was 6-year-old Lourdes ...dressed in ...white, decked out in lace gloves, a crucifix, and a studded belt with the words "BOY TOY."

That's the horror? the belt said "boy toy"?

Paving the way for the entrance of Madonna and her entourage of sexual exhibitionists...

sexual exhibitionists? you've gotta be kidding. There was nothing that could be called sexual exhibition.

Lourdes tossed flower petals on the dance floor while a mosh pit of fans writhed in front of her and the porno soundtrack throbbed behind her.

a porno soundtrack? is she nuts? seriously, I'll go back and watch again and if there's a porno soundtrack playing I'll admit I was wrong. I sure don't remember any porno soundtrack.

...What kind of craven, twisted mother enlists her own daughter in such a shameless public orgy?...

shameless public orgy? you've gotta be kidding.

And what about the other grownups in this damaged child's life?

damaged child? damaged how?

...reckless abuse of childhood innocence.

abuse of innocence? the kid, wearing a white dress walked down the stage throwing flower petals. that's it.

...did nothing to rescue Lourdes from the sewer of immorality onstage...

sewer of immorality? I seriously wonder if this writer has ever watched television or ventured out of her, presumably Amish, community.

...his wife, gussied up in the latest dominatrix chic, slithered up and down the bodies of two young nymphets old enough to be her daughters ...

shouldn't that be "young" enough to be her daughters? anyway it was a dance routine - dance routines often have some slithering these days. I don't think the slithering was extreme, it was done pretty quickly.

...while Mummy tongue-wrestled the two pop vixens...

"tounge wrestling" wasn't done - you couldn't even tell if there was any tounge involvement at all without closely watching in slow motion.

The girls were covered up a lot more in this routine than in a lot of there other appearances. I give Britney credit for accepting "equal status" with Christina - a lot of performers in her place would have insisted that they were the bigger star and wouldn't perform in a routine that implied they were equal.

By the way, John, just to be clear, my reply above wasn't meant to be addressed to you - I was, of course, "replying" to the writer of the column.

All of this promotes a slut mentality that dimwitted chicks lap up

all of what exactly promotes a slut mentality? I'd agree that some of the girls' dance moves could be called suggestive, but it was a long way from the pornographic display that the opionion writer implies. No, it wasn't something I'd expect to see in an Olsen Twins movie, but really it was just girls dancing.

...If you have a daughter, which I doubt, and you want to color her upbringing with this garbage then knock yourself out...

if you have a daughter, which I don't know, how are you possibly going to shield her from this "garbage"? and if you could, why bother? I've got two nieces and they've seen tons of stuff worse than this. In fact, the rest of the VMA award show was full of stuff that was way worse than the Madonna dance routine.

...there's much better pop culture out there....

I think we agree there. My main point was that the opinion writer over-reacted - by a long shot. Madonna allowed her kid to walk on the stage throwing rose petals before her dance routine - big deal. My "Amish" comment came from my observation that the opinion writer must never watch tv - there's worse things on MTV every day; she acts like this one routine was something shockingly out of the ordinary.

Anyway, I'm not really disagreeing with you, but if you re-read the article you might see what I mean about the opinion writer's over-reacting.
