You 're An Old Detroiter If.......

Forgive me, but You're an Old Detroiter if:

You took a "moonlight cruise" to Bob-lo with Captain Bob-lo or went to Edgewater amusement Park.

You remember the big stove that was on Jefferson Ave. at the entrance to Belle Isle.

You shopped at Hughes and Hatcher, B. Siegel, Peck and Peck, Himelhoch's,Robert Halls, Crowley's, Shoppers Fair, EJ Korvettes or Federals.

You rode the elevator at J. L. Hudson, which was "run" by an elevator operator with her white gloves on.

You remember a Winkleman's and Sanders store in your neighborhood.

You remember the "Big Snow", Buffalo Bob, Howdy Doody, Clarabell, PhineasT. Bluster, and Princess Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring.

You remember Twin Pines Dairy delivered milk and juice to the chute on the side of your house and Milky the Clown performed magic with the magic Words, "Twin Pines".

You remember the Good Humor man in a white uniform, ringing the bells and driving down your street.

You remember the Olympia Stadium.

You remember when Vernor's  was made  on Woodward Ave.  and a bearded troll was on the bottle.

Your mom got groceries at Great Scott, Food Fair, Wrigley's or Chatham.

Your mom saved Holden Red Stamps, S&H Green Stamps, or Gold Bell Gift Stamps and you licked the stamps and put them in those little books.

Kresge's and Woolworth's were "DIME STORES".

You had an Uncle in the furniture business (Joshua Doore).

You know who Bill Kennedy is.

You remember this telephone number:  Tyler 8-7100 (Belvedere Construction) and the slogan "We do good work".

Your phone number may have started with Tyler, Vermont, Broadway,Kenwood,Diamond, Webster, Dunkirk, Warwick, Vinwood, Townsend, University orTrinity.

You saw the Detroit Lions play football in Tiger Stadium.

You remember Black Bart and the Faygo pop song.  Or how  about "Which way did they go?  Which way did he go?  He went for Faygo, old fashion root beer".

You watched Rita Bell's Prize Movie in the mornings.

You know who Sonny Elliot is.  Do you remember Sonny using chalk on a map of Michigan?

You remember Jack LeGoff and Van Patrick.

You remember Milky the Clown, Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Poopdeck Paul and Captain Jolly, Fred Wolf from the whacky wiggloo.

You visited the Wonder Bread Bakery and got to take home a mini loaf of bread.

Your address had a two-digit "zone" before there were zip codes. Detroit19, Michigan.

You remember "Get on the right track at 9 Mile and Mack, to get the best deal in town.  Roy O'Brian...it's the best deal in town".

Your house had a laundry chute and a milk chute and a coal chute.

You remember going to Detroit Edison with your mom to exchange burned out light bulbs for new ones.

Go back before Paul Carey, and Ernie would say, "And here's....Ray Lane!" He was ok too.

You are an old Detroiter if you remember the Tigers actually have a decent team.

they used to be great!

I got to see one of the World Series Games against the St Louis Cardinals when i was in Second Grade. a few nights later, they won the series.

Dad packed us into the car, and we drove down Woodward honking our horn and yelling out the windows....lots of noise, but it was SAFE.... not like today whee people would be looting and burning things up!

Do you remember Ghoulardi and Big Chuck and Hoolihan? Or shopping at Giant Tiger?

No. I only remember The Ghoul because I had cousins in Port Huron, and they could get a Detroit TV channel, and when we visited them, that was our big weekend night deal, watching The Ghoul's creature features. I thought he was out of Detroit. Geez, is that ever a long time ago.

I sure do remember the "Tribute to the Americans" and yeah CKLW was out of Canada wasn't it? lol But I always associated it with Motown – Dee-troit because of all homegrown sweet soul music they played.

Yeah, but for the last 20 years they have been the worst team in baseball with no real competition.

I know it.

Makes me mad, too!

And what's this "Comerica Park" stuff?

If you remember when Northland and Eastland were open air shopping centers -- and sat on the Northland hippopotamus.

No, 'perfect' was Ernie and Ray Lane, who was pre-Paul. It took me a few years to accept Mr. Carey.
When the Tigers let Ernie go a few years back, I felt like a knife went through me. I heard CBS baseball had picked him up, and I searched GR to find out if any of our radio stations carried it, but with no luck. So, one afternoon while I was asleep (I worked the night shift and weekends), my clock radio goes off and as I'm in dreamland, I swear I hear Ernie and sure enough, there he was on the radio. I can't even explain how happy I was. I've always thought that if I was ever in a coma, he'd be the voice to bring me out of it!
If we're going to try to bring Joe Schmidt back, we may as well try for Alex Karras...at least he's still alive!
Remember Willie throwing out Lou Brock in the series? Remember the game where Mickey Lolich hit a home-run? The look on his face was priceless.
I'm still arguing with a friend over McLain's '68 record. I think it was 31-3 (not counting any post season or All-Star), but he thinks it was 31-6. Can anyone help me on this one?
Also remember when Jimmy Hoffa went out for that really long lunch... (still think he's a part of the Renaissance!)

Wonder what we would have to do to get a copy of that?

It would be appropriate today!
