Forgive me, but You're an Old Detroiter if:

You took a "moonlight cruise" to Bob-lo with Captain Bob-lo or went to Edgewater amusement Park.

You remember the big stove that was on Jefferson Ave. at the entrance to Belle Isle.

You shopped at Hughes and Hatcher, B. Siegel, Peck and Peck, Himelhoch's,Robert Halls, Crowley's, Shoppers Fair, EJ Korvettes or Federals.

You rode the elevator at J. L. Hudson, which was "run" by an elevator operator with her white gloves on.

You remember a Winkleman's and Sanders store in your neighborhood.

You remember the "Big Snow", Buffalo Bob, Howdy Doody, Clarabell, PhineasT. Bluster, and Princess Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring.

You remember Twin Pines Dairy delivered milk and juice to the chute on the side of your house and Milky the Clown performed magic with the magic Words, "Twin Pines".

You remember the Good Humor man in a white uniform, ringing the bells and driving down your street.

You remember the Olympia Stadium.

You remember when Vernor's  was made  on Woodward Ave.  and a bearded troll was on the bottle.

Your mom got groceries at Great Scott, Food Fair, Wrigley's or Chatham.

Your mom saved Holden Red Stamps, S&H Green Stamps, or Gold Bell Gift Stamps and you licked the stamps and put them in those little books.

Kresge's and Woolworth's were "DIME STORES".

You had an Uncle in the furniture business (Joshua Doore).

You know who Bill Kennedy is.

You remember this telephone number:  Tyler 8-7100 (Belvedere Construction) and the slogan "We do good work".

Your phone number may have started with Tyler, Vermont, Broadway,Kenwood,Diamond, Webster, Dunkirk, Warwick, Vinwood, Townsend, University orTrinity.

You saw the Detroit Lions play football in Tiger Stadium.

You remember Black Bart and the Faygo pop song.  Or how  about "Which way did they go?  Which way did he go?  He went for Faygo, old fashion root beer".

You watched Rita Bell's Prize Movie in the mornings.

You know who Sonny Elliot is.  Do you remember Sonny using chalk on a map of Michigan?

You remember Jack LeGoff and Van Patrick.

You remember Milky the Clown, Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Poopdeck Paul and Captain Jolly, Fred Wolf from the whacky wiggloo.

You visited the Wonder Bread Bakery and got to take home a mini loaf of bread.

Your address had a two-digit "zone" before there were zip codes. Detroit19, Michigan.

You remember "Get on the right track at 9 Mile and Mack, to get the best deal in town.  Roy O'Brian...it's the best deal in town".

Your house had a laundry chute and a milk chute and a coal chute.

You remember going to Detroit Edison with your mom to exchange burned out light bulbs for new ones.

The Giant Tire ( Good year or Goodrich? ) and the giant cans of Reddi-Whip!

Not sure about the story where the tire got loose from it's moorings and went rolling down the highway!

What about the travel show with George Perot? That gravelly 4 pack a day (and i suspect somewhat boozy) voice " hello my friends this is george perot. today we will show you some film of st. ignace by night..." Or Bill Kennedy dropping the name of "his good friend ALAN HALE , JR." every chance he got?. Two homegrown originals, bill and George.

ol' bill, so the story goes actually had a few minor character roles early in His career. So He would occasionally reminisce about His time in tinseltown, and especially his good friend...ALAN HALE JR!.

That's Cleveland.
It's funny, I lived in Cleveland until 1996. I had someone send me one of these for Detroit. I also got the "you know you're a baby boomer if..." from my sister who is eight years older than me.
Do you remember Ghoulardi and Big Chuck and Hoolihan?
Or shopping at Giant Tiger?

Or, on your class trip in middle school you or someone you knew threw a deck chair overboard to see if you could get away with it. Some did, some didn't.

Heck, I had multiple relatives in the family that were executive-level employees at H & H. Dad worked his way thru college there.

Or you remember the ferris wheel on the 3rd(?) floor on your annual Xmas Eve visit.

I actually delivered the News to a local Winkelman's.

"You remember the Olympia Stadium."

Saw my first Wings game there. The place smelled of beer and urine.

"You remember when Vernor's was made on Woodward Ave. and a bearded troll was on the bottle."

And a little bar around the corner just north of the plant(Forest Ave?) called Verne's had the world's best patty melts for just $2.25. They came wrapped in wax paper to keep them hot. A pair of those for lunch and you were that much closer to angioplasty.

"You know who Bill Kennedy is."

The man hated any movie made afte 1961. Saw him regularly at Merit Drugs in GPW.

"You know who Sonny Elliot is. Do you remember Sonny using chalk on a map of Michigan?"

And he scared the hell out of this youngster when he pulled off the tip of the UP and made it squeak. Gave me nightmares.

They are still there, and they still use the jingle. Its a classic.

Jack the Bellboy (Ed McKenzie in real life) did the overnight show for many years. WJBK-AM (1500 KHz) among other stations.

Ed, who passed on two years ago, was a ham operator so I knew him from that circle. His obit is at http://www.freep.com/news/obituaries/jack6_20010206.htm

Speaking of Freddy Wolf, recall the time he got fired in the middle of his show (I think it was from WXYZ 1270) for making an un-acceptable comment when he thought the microphone was off?

Just looked it up on imdb.com... they both had small character roles in a war movie called "destination tokyo" which starred cary grant, and presumably became friends after that. From the looks of bills list, he was a minor character actor in "b" movie westerns and t.v. shows into the early 60s, which is when he started up "at the movies with bill kennedy". That ran into the early 80s .

Everybody knows Ernie Harwell. A real Detroiter remembers what a perfect pairing his Arkansas twang made with Paul Carey's booming Midwestern bass. Ernie had the first 3, Paul the middle 3, Ernie finished and they would share the postgame duties. We were so blessed. I feel a little sorry for my 1 year old son.

gaylord and holliday were responsible for that jingle, and are still doing commercials today . their latest is for "joes produce" (i work nights, and listen to a LOT of am radio). The roy o' brien ad is their most famous.
