[history]
WATERFOWL hunters got some good news this week with the announcement that the daily bag limits for Canada geese hunting during September have been increased in almost all of New York's waterfowl hunting zones. The increase, from five geese per day to eight, will help local authorities reduce the numbers of these birds, who have become numerous and a nuisance in many parts of the state.

Border collies work, but they just chase the flying rats from the golf course to the kid's playground.
Killing them is the best solution.

Now if we could just hunt the non-migratory geese living in our parks.

Agreed, but until the animal nuts lighten up and let us take care of the problem once and for all, this is the only solution. The kids and the poor are going to get screwed because trained border collies cost tens of thousands of dollars, and my private golf course has a lot more money to spend than the city parks.

But didn't they have a bear hunt this summer for the first time in forever?
The first bear hunt in over thirty years is tentatively scheduled for December.
But they are constantly protesting down in Trenton, and McGreevey is a total worm who could turn on the issue at any moment.
The bears are not very nervous.

I've seen some of those punt guns (the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michael's, Maryland has a few on display) that could take out 200 geese in one shot. The problem was that after you snuck up on the geese and pulled the rope to the trigger, when the smoke cleared, you were 100 yards away and would have to paddle back to gather your catch. Well, at least whatever you could fit into the skiff... And, yes, they've been outlawed for many moons now.

And targeting from a greater distance is also easier.

I was working up in the Twin Cities the other day listening to local talk radio, where the geese were affectionately referred to as "sky carp".

Good news. Canadian Geese have joined pigeons as "rats with wings" to us urbanites.
How about a goose hunt in Prospect or Central Park?

We have some massive local flocks in western New York, and not enough hunters to cut down the numbers. Raising the limits should make for more shooting, but not having a limit is a much better solution. I HATE playing the back nine at beaver island because of the goose droppings. BTW, deep fried goose fingers are finger likin' good.

most likely will not be hunted as there is no sport in hunting an animal that won't get out of the way of a moving car. You are right about the level of sport being low, but they may cook up as well and we truely do need to rid of them in camps and parks and school yards. In place, they breed several times a year and without hunting will soon overpopulate every place with a protectionist attitude.
New York is heading in the right direction.

BTW, deep fried goose fingers are finger likin' good. Goose meat is really greasy already.
