[history]
WATERFOWL hunters got some good news this week with the announcement that the daily bag limits for Canada geese hunting during September have been increased in almost all of New York's waterfowl hunting zones. The increase, from five geese per day to eight, will help local authorities reduce the numbers of these birds, who have become numerous and a nuisance in many parts of the state.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-haawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Higher daily bag limits + fewer shots = more efficient hunting.

I am outraged by this example of Bush administration political smallmindedness. Just because the American-hating Canadian socialists have opposed US actions to keep most of the world free is no reason to retaliate against their geese. Where is the compassion in that?(No question, you'll see this argument in the NYT, Krugman, Pilcher, or Dowd).

Nobody hates geese more than I do, but I think this may be exactly the wrong way to go about solving the problem. There are two kinds of canada geese: The migratory ones (who really are endangered) and the non-migratory ferral ones who are the descendants of escaped "live decoys." The ferral geese are the ones who stick around and crap all over parks and golf courses. They most likely will not be hunted as there is no sport in hunting an animal that won't get out of the way of a moving car. So if we get rid of more of the migratory geese, will more ferral geese move in to take the spots vacated by their cousins? I bet they do. Ferral geese are like liberals they take advantage of every free lunch made available to them.

They need a minimum daily bag limit on these poop machines.

That type of talk makes too much sense. You'll get the same reaction from hunters as I get from my "If you really want to control deer population, then you should have doe only hunts" rant.

As a "birder" by hobbie, I am greatly offended by the use hand-held missle launchers. The Russian made SA-7 is not accurate and may cause unneeded noise as it misses. The stinger is far more accurate.

Mmmmmm, nuthin' like a goose simmered all day, in a crockpot, with BBQ sauce.

Sort of different. I care not about deer either, but at least they are naturally occuring. Canada geese who live in your town year-round are about as naturally occuring as stray cats. They are not part of the natural eco system, they are unhealthy, and they out-compete ducks, swans, and other geese. The real solution is not hunting. The real solution is to send in an exterminator and wipe them out.

Well, you sound like you know a lot more about the issue than I, so I'll buy into your solution.
All I know is that they are vile crap factories that ruin every place they move into.
Maybe we can make shooting the lethargic golf course ones more interesting by tatooing a few random ones with valuable prize notices.
That way, people will split their heads with 4-irons, looking for new Ford Explorer or a giant screen television.

I used to kill canada geese on golf courses all the time until my course got a pair of border collies to drive them away. Before then we had so many that it was inevitible that sooner or later you were going to hit one and break a leg or a wing.

I live in New Jersey, where they'll jail you for killing the vermin.
It'll take an outbreak of some gooseshit disease killing a bunch of toddlers before they change that law.

My golf club hired a couple Border Collies to solve its goose problem, and the new employees have done a magfificent job. ....Tirelessly chasing the little shit-factories away. And it appears they've stayed away.
