3rd Battalion 10th Infantry Regiment "Renegades" |
3D Training Brigade conducts Army Basic Combat Training continuously at Fort Leonard Wood, home of the United States Army Maneuver Support Center. We strive to produce values-based soldiers. This is done by our Drill Sergeants demonstrating the 7 Core Army Values throughout the 9-weeks of Army Basic Combat Training. These new soldiers are capable of taking their place in the ranks of the United States Army in the field upon arrival. |
|
3d Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment conducts gender integrated basic combat training to produce values-based, disciplined Soldiers, who are trained in basic combat skills, and are fully prepared to enter their Advanced Individual Training. For well over 200 years, citizen soldiers in the U.S. Army have been defending freedom for the world. The history of the 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment is rooted deeply in the tradition of the U.S. Army. Our soldiers have served their country in all corners of the globe, performing various types of missions. Todays soldiers draw strength from the heroic deeds of those who have served before. The 10th Infantry's proud history began on March 3, 1855. Citizen soldiers demonstrated their loyalty to the nation by gathering at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania to form the heart of the new 10th Infantry Regiment. Within months of activation, the soldiers found themselves on the western frontier. Their proud motto RENEGADES was first echoed across the battlefields of the Civil War. The 10th Infantry bravely fought in the battles of the Peninsula, the second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancelorville, Gettysburg, and many others. The union today owes its survival in part to the gallantry and selfless service of the warriors of the 10th Infantry during the Civil War. The young Regiments lineage grew as the troops moved further west to fight in the Indian Wars. Respect among warriors developed as we learned from the most spirited mounted infantrymen in history- The Indian Warrior. Leaving American soil in 1898, the 10th Infantry Remembered the Maine as they entered the Spanish-American War. The 10th Infantry was among the first to see combat in Cuba. For their actions, the regiment was awarded campaign credit for Santiago. The Philippine Insurrection soon followed and again the 10th Infantry answered the call to duty. During World War I, the heroes of the 10th Infantry returned to the United States and was divided into cadres that were used to form the leadership foundations of the new regiments. Soon after, the 10th Infantry discovered the horrors of trench warfare, in the mud and cold of France. Despite the introduction of tanks, machine guns, and chemical warfare to the battlefield, the personal courage of the 10th Infantry's soldiers enabled them to return victoriously. When freedom called again in World War II, the soldiers of the 10th Infantry found themselves revisiting the once bloodied and familiar terrain of France. On D-Day, the proud colors of the 10th Infantry Regiment advanced bravely upon the beaches of Normandy. Throughout the extremes of World War II, the heroic deeds of the 10th Infantry soldiers brought great honor to the Regiment. Between October 31, 1929 and June 1, 1957 the battle weary but proud colors of the 10th Infantry Regiment were inactivated and reactivated on five occasions. On June 4 1987, the 10th Infantry Regiment was reactivated at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. During the past two years, over 7,500 proud and ready initial entry soldiers have graduated and entered the ranks of the United States Army. Graduates from 3-10 are serving the nation in all corners of the globe, including Kosovo, Bosnia, Kuwait, Korea, and Afghanistan. 3-10 Infantry has produced a proud history, which is extended everyday as they train values-based soldiers, who are appreciative of the contributions of their predecessors. Like those who have served before, in units all over the world, soldiers will echo the Regiments proud motto RENEGADES!

Muscle Failure for the Soul or Reflections on the Spiritual Side of Basic Training Basic training is a tough time for most trainees. Sure the old timers complain that its not as tough as it used to be when we road marched in two feet of snow up-hill both ways, but its still the biggest challenge most new soldiers have ever faced. It is demanding in nearly every imaginable way: physically, emotionally, mentally, socially and yes, spiritually. Immediately upon arrival at 3-10 Infantry the soldiers begin to learn about a phenomenon known as "muscle failure." This is what happens when the body is stretched to its absolute limits. The drill sergeants will assist the soldiers in achieving muscle failure by having them do repetitions of a particular exercise--oh, lets say push-ups for example--until they can no longer do that exercise in any way shape or form. Why do we exercise to the point of muscle failure? Contrary to the popular opinion of basic trainees it is not simply for the sadistic pleasure of the drill sergeants. It is because only by going to the limit can we begin to stretch the limits. Muscle failure makes us stronger the next time we face the challenge. "Muscle Failure for the Soul" is what I call the spiritual phenomenon that parallels the physical phenomenon of muscle failure. When we come to the absolute limits of our own personal strength we come to a place where we are forced to look for outside help. In the pressure cooker of Basic Training many soldiers look to God for strength in a way theyve never done before--many for the fist time ever. Of course this concept isnt original with me. It was God Himself who came up with it. The prophet Jeremiah spoke the words of the Lord to the nation of Israel telling them that they were about to face the most difficult time they had ever known. They would be exiled from their homeland and face death, destruction and isolation. But then he added these words of hope and comfort, "I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart (Jeremiah 29:11-13, NIV)." The plan that God had was to allow difficult times to drive his people to their knees, to bring them to a place where they would seek him with all of their hearts. In the same way I have over and over again seen the Lord use the challenges of Basic Training to cause soldiers to seek him with all their hearts. If you or someone you love is about to face the challenges of Basic training, pray that the Lord will use this time to strengthen the soul as well as the body.
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may become mature and complete, not lacking anything" James 1:2-3 (NIV)

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full. |

Religious History
1688 Death of English Puritan clergyman and writer John Bunyan, 69. Imprisoned several times between 1660 and 1672, Bunyan used these periods of isolation to pen his two literary masterpieces, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666) and Pilgrim's Progress (1678).
1757 Anglican clergyman and hymnwriter John Newton wrote in a letter: 'I am persuaded that love and humility are the highest attainments in the school of Christ and the brightest evidences that He is indeed our Master.'
1824 Birth of Anna B. Warner, American hymnwriter. She never married, but lived with her sister Susan in New York state. In 1860, a novel they co-authored contained a poem which became one of the most beloved of all children's hymns: I Know.'
1861 Birth of Jesse Brown Pounds, American hymnwriter. During her lifetime she published nine books, 50 cantatas and over 400 religious song texts. Three of her hymns remain popular today: "Anywhere With Jesus," "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" and "The Way of the Cross Leads Home."
1870 Birth of Maria Montessori, Italian educator. She developed a theory of teaching which emphasized a reinforcement of initiative, and a freedom of movement for the child. Her theory of elementary education has since been named, appropriately, the "Montessori Method."
