Schwarzenegger Would "Do Damage" to Republican Party Suggests Political Analyst

Social conservatives have a viable candidate in McClintock

TORONTO, August 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Steve Jalsevac, a long-time political analyst with Campaign Life Coalition Canada suggests that were actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to capture the Republican Governorship of California it would mean political damage for the Republican Party. "A core constituency within the Republican Party is its social conservatives, most importantly those who are pro-life and pro-family. Schwarzenegger is so obviously a liberal on social issues, his running as a Republican reeks of opportunism and demeans the party's integrity," said Jalsevac.

Republicans have another capable candidate in the race who is considered authentically conservative. California State Sen. Tom McClintock, first elected to the State Assembly in 1982, is also running. McClintock ran for state controller last year and lost by a margin of 0.3% to a Democrat. In that race, McClintock captured more votes than any other Republican on the ballot. In an interview with Human Events released today, McClintock acknowledges that he is pro-life and pro-family and willing to act legislatively on those convictions.

"As we have seen so many times in Canadian politics, conservative parties are usually a delicate balance between fiscal and social conservatives, and where fiscal conservatives are so insensitive as to alienate social conservatives, the Party suffers debilitating division," Jalsevac told LifeSite News. "Arnold may well give the Republicans Governorship of another state, but his strong liberal stance on social issues will damage Party unity and weaken critical differences in policy between the two major parties."

On a radio talk show yesterday, Schwarzenegger attempted to appear less offensive to social conservatives saying that he is pro-choice, but against "partial-birth" abortion; that he supports current domestic-partnership law but not gay 'marriage'". However, Schwarzenegger's Republican strategist Allan Hoffenblum was candid about the actor's negligible chances of appealing to social conservatives. Speaking of "family-value types", Hoffenblum said, "that is the group that is least likely to vote for Arnold Schwarzenegger regardless."

I wouldn't count it as a win if it were Nevada, or Idaho, or Alabama, or Texas. In California, denying the RATS of an office is a win in and of itself. In New York City, Giulianni was a win.

When you win, things are possible. When you lose, nothing is possible. We are beyond moral victories on the west coast -- they don't exist here. The Greens (and groups even further to the left: The Nihilists who are into depopulation) are on the move and growing in power. The RATS are running to them.

Maybe Arnold is 1/3 of a loaf. Maybe he's less than that. But if you just achieved a moderately conservative fiscal policy and nothing else, you've gotten something when otherwise you'd get nothing. Republicans are not going to start down the long road back on the west coast without making a first step...and without winning something, somewhere.

Do not despise small beginnings.

Hey, I like the guy. He's a likeable guy. But if I were a Californian, I'd have to think pretty hard before voting for him as governor.

By then, even Barbra Streisand may be ready to support a real Republican by then. She pays taxes too.

You are either delusional or on drugs. Streisand does not care anything about paying taxes. She has plenty of money and the advisors to shield most of it from taxes.

Streisand wants a Socialist utopia, just like Bustamonte and Davis.

Opinion piece - The Ventura Star

GOP wrong about Schwarzenegger; McClintock better
By Andrew Russo
August 29, 2003

Arnold Schwarzenegger's failure to move beyond the 22 percent to 25 percent range in most recent California surveys is sending the Republican Party's country-club establishment into panic. Schwarzenegger, after all, fits that mold perfectly. A so-called "fiscal conservative," but "social moderate," the Terminator was supposed to be the great white hope of the comatose California GOP. We all know true conservative Republicans can't win general elections in the Golden State, so the Republican rank-and-file were supposed to play good soldiers, follow the lead of the moneyed party elite, and joyfully climb aboard the Arnold Express for the only train back to the statehouse.

Well, as is usually the case, the GOP establishment was wrong. Its great white hope isn't quite catching on. Between his questionable choice of advisers (one a prominent Democrat who wants to scuttle Proposition 13) and his liberal views on a host of issues, ranging from abortion, gun control and gay marriage, to his support of new high-spending big government programs (i.e., Proposition 49), the Terminator is a hard pill for the hard core to swallow. And, if the polls are correct, they're not swallowing.

The Los Angeles Times poll showed Schwarzenegger drawing only 39 percent of the Republican vote. This despite the fact he's a household name, a movie celebrity in a state where Hollywood is king, the massive media buildup prior to his announcement ("will he or won't he?"), and the subsequent Arnoldmania that has swept the state. Yet, fewer than four in 10 Republicans in California are biting.

This fact alone proves once again that the Republican elite is all wet and that it's the grass-roots Republicans -- the precinct walkers and envelope-lickers -- who are the real representatives of the state GOP. It proves conclusively that one endorsement from the California Republican Assembly is worth a thousand endorsements from the Lincoln Club of Orange County.

Now, the party bigwigs are desperate to save Schwarzenegger. As Cruz Bustamante roars ahead of the Terminator, are the bigwigs having second thoughts about the actor-turned-politician they have put their money on? Have they seen the light and are they perhaps reconsidering?

No way. This gang is temperamentally incapable of admitting error. They have decided instead that the only way to salvage their political mistake is to demand that the real Republican in the race for governor, state Sen. Tom McClintock, drop out and toss a life preserver to their golden boy.

Yet, why is Arnold's weakness the fault of McClintock?

Is it McClintock's fault that Schwarzenegger's negatives are almost as high as his positives?

The truth is that voters are beginning to recognize that the Hollywood megastar is, to use Texas terminology, all hat and no cattle. Any individual who seeks to be governor of California but has to seclude himself for 10 days with consultants and counselors to tell him what to think simply cannot be taken seriously. You just can't cram for the governorship of the nation's largest state (and one that's suffering the worst financial crisis in history) like you would for a 10th-grade history exam.

McClintock doesn't need anyone to tell him what to think or what to say. Motivated by a strong Jeffersonian philosophy of limited government and with a 20-year track record of carefully dissecting the problems confronting California, McClilntock is perhaps overqualified to be governor. And, look what his dark-horse candidacy has accomplished in less than a month:

With a limited campaign budget (and no personal fortune to pour into the contest), a small staff and no box office sensations to his credit, McClintock is quickly becoming the candidate to watch in the recall race.

Doubling his voter strength in the Times poll in just a few weeks, McClintock is generating the kind of enthusiasm and excitement among rank-and-file Republicans not seen since Ronald Reagan's first campaign for governor in 1966.

Actually outraising Democrat presidential candidate Howard Dean on the Internet, the insurgent Thousand Oaks senator is attracting the support of Californians fed up with the deceit and doubletalk of conventional politicians and seeking a breath of fresh air. McClintock offers them that and more: He's an authentic populist who, if elected, will shake California's political establishment to the core.

And, isn't that what the Gray Davis recall is all about? A true populist uprising against the same kind of corrupt politicians beholden to special interests that Hiram Johnson, father of the recall provision, railed against in the early 1900s.

With an agenda that is simple and direct, McClintock is rallying Californians fed up with high taxes, out-of-control spending, a laughable public school system and stifling bureaucracy. He is offering hope to voters in a state where cynicism reigns. He is speaking truth to power. And, in the year of the unprecedented recall election in this, the trendsetter of states, that could just be the ticket to victory.

I think its unfortunate that Tommy is getting fallout, but the mud being slung his way is actually in reaction to the vile rudeness of the extreme anti-Arnies, and disruptors, and demoncrats, all of whom occupy the other side.

Now you are counting on Barbra Streisand's vote in three years, when you won't even tolerate moderates today???? So what are you going to give Barbra for her support? She's (and all the others who think like her) going to vote pro-life, pro-family, anti-immigrant, pro-gun out of the blue???

You won't get in a coalition with Riordan or Schwarzenegger or Giulianni, but you are fully prepared to make common-cause with Streisand types in three years!?

If I could bend around that far, I'd quit my current career and join Barnum & Bailey!

My position all along has been simply that Schwarzenegger does not need your votes to win. He can win without them. However, that means you have no seat at the table when it comes to impacting his policy. You can take your ball and go home. You have an absolute right to do just that. And when policy is made you have abandoned any influence you might have held over what that policy is.

You see, I don't think that your voting for McClintock or whoever else may appeal to you will necessarily throw the election to Bustamante. Scwharzenegger only needs a relative fraction of those who are arch-doctrinaire-conservative in order to win. Their numbers are not plentiful enough to damage him seriously. And he will get a chunk of them, no matter what.

So those who are of your opinion can go into his coalition or not...at your choice. If you joined his coalition, he would have to listen to you, because you helped him win. If you don't, he doesn't. He won without you.

Now as far as predicting what is going to happen in California in the next three years: If you can see the future as accurately as all that...by all means, get into work as a stock-broker or at least get one of the 1-900 psychic lines and make some big money off of it. Anyone who can predict a situation where Barbra Streisand is going to go hard right in three years is worth a veritable mint, especially in California.

Well I am in California, and I'm active, and I'm always feeling the pulse, and I am thinking very hard and I am in support of him. I am quite frankly offended, not by the nature of the rudeness, but by perpetrators, and what they are supposed to be representing.
