A local teen was about to enter her senior year at South Euclid's Regina Catholic High School but she got kicked out because of her Muslim headscarf.

NewsChannel5's Joe Pagonakis reported that Amal Jamal, 17, was told that wearing the headpiece to class is in direct violation of the uniform dress code.

The school dress code specifically states that students are not allowed to wear hats, head wraps or bandannas. School officials said they would not make an exception for the teen.

So far, the student and the school have not been able to reach a compromise.

Amal's family has made no official comment on the situation, but has hired an attorney.

Many people think the school should re-examine the situation.

A similar incident occurred recently at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio. There was a big debate over whether a boy could wear a turban to class, but the school ended up allowing him to do so.

Regina officials have not yet release an official response.

Because Regina is a private school, it can lawfully enforce any dress code it wants to, NewsChannel5 reported.

What case can they possibly have? It's a private school. An attorney may have agreed to take their money, but that doesn't mean that their case isn't a loser.

Private schools are cool because the students can attend ONLY if the school wants them. There are a lot of undesirable students in the world -- but private schools don't have to take any of them.

This is EXACTLY the reason that we never want school vouchers approved. Vouchers would be treated as if the money was contributed by taxpayers. The ACLU would force "separation of church and state" in any private school that accepts vouchers. In like manner, the states would force private schools to accept all applicants as a condition of receiving "public" money. The quality of private schools would be destroyed. There are ALWAYS strings attached to accepting government money.

Ironically enough, the headscarf (as opposed to the more extreme burkha) was adopted in imitation of the Roman Catholics.

I would not allow a nun to inflict beatings on the backs of my children's hands.

Most teacher in Catholic schools are not nuns but lay teachers (at least in our area). My husband will tell you that if you got whacked once you never did anything again to bring the wrath of the nuns down on your hands, they learned this lesson well.

Scares from the wealts on my hands. I never went to Catholic school. However AS an adult, I would not allow a nun to inflict beatings on the backs of my children's hands.

I exaggerated the scares. I went the Catholic schools in the 50's and 60's. Times were different. The nuns did use a ruler on the open palm, but never to extremes. I would have to say when the schools got rid of corporal punishment by nuns or vice-principals in public schools, things went down th crapper real quick. Losing prayer in school came first, then no punishments to speak of... true incrementalism in action. see it for yourself.

And the article mentions that she is entering her senior year. Is this her fourth year at this school? Did she wear the scarf previous years? Why now? People will expect the Catholic school to cave. I agree, just damn...

I am not catholic. My kids go to catholic school. I don't ask them to change to accomodate me. I think it is the height of arrogance for someone to ask a Catholic School to adopt Muslim practices. The request itself offends me.

Ijust sent them an email congratulating them and offering a donation if need be. IF this goes to court we must support the school send them money and let us make sure the have the finest lawyers
