Girl Kicked Out Of School For Wearing Muslim Scarf Thu Aug 28, 6:33 PM ET

A local teen was about to enter her senior year at South Euclid's Regina Catholic High School but she got kicked out because of her Muslim headscarf.

NewsChannel5's Joe Pagonakis reported that Amal Jamal, 17, was told that wearing the headpiece to class is in direct violation of the uniform dress code.

The school dress code specifically states that students are not allowed to wear hats, head wraps or bandannas. School officials said they would not make an exception for the teen.

So far, the student and the school have not been able to reach a compromise.

Amal's family has made no official comment on the situation, but has hired an attorney.

Many people think the school should re-examine the situation.

A similar incident occurred recently at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio. There was a big debate over whether a boy could wear a turban to class, but the school ended up allowing him to do so.

Regina officials have not yet release an official response.

Because Regina is a private school, it can lawfully enforce any dress code it wants to, NewsChannel5 reported.

On the other hand, there are plenty of lawyers who will go to the mat for the Catholic School's right to enforce its dress code. The ACLU is all about making money from its pro bono representation in civil rights cases (where the prevailing litigant gets its fees paid by the other side where the suit was successful). This one sounds like a dog where the ACLU wouldn't likely recover its fees.

Go for it - I'll take a pass. One thing about Christians that the media "conveniently" ignores is the fact that they won't pull your guts out and drag your body through the streets when you intentionally (or even unintenionally) insult their religion. The practicioners of the Religion of Peace cannot make that claim.

Catholic schools have ALWAYS allowed entry of children of other religions

I attended a Catholic prep school in DC w/the daughter of one of the Egyptian diplomats. My understanding was that they lived near the school, didn't want her going too far on her own, and wanted to send her to a girls school. Problem solved.

She didn't wear a head scarf. She was also married off at the end of senior year. Another problem solved, I suppose. : )

Look, I'm guessing there are approximately three good Muslim schools in this country, the rest are run by extremists. These parents wanted their kid to get the most normal education possible.

I did not attend Catholic School, my husband did, and we tried to get my sons in but could not due to overcrowding. First thing they tell you is what they expect in the way dresscode, no exceptions black pants & white shirt for boys, uniform skirts & white blouse for girls, black or blue cardigans only

The article states she was about to enter her senior year. Did she attend the school prior to that? If so, was she wearing the head-thingy before that?

I applaud the school for taking a stand. Of course, her parents will cry "discrimination" but it seems they should have known beforehand.

The real issue here is if the school is a privately run and financed institution. If so then they should have the right to post the rules that they see fit and if a person doesn't want to follow siad rules then they can choose to go somewhere else.

Start taking taxpayer dollars then you have a problem because then you cannot discriminate or limit people in any fashion.

Mary Rose Oaker, former LONG TERM Congresswoman from the exact same district Dennis Kucinich now represents(D-OH), just happens to be the newly appointed President of the Arab League (full name of organization not remembered).

Me thinks this is a tad too transparent to be anything more than a Christian fight to advance Kucinich in Ohio. He's in BEEEG trouble in retaining his seat, and embracing all the Eastern European CATHOLICS in his region would help him.
