Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

Christ forgives all sinners. I am truly amazed at your comment. May God forgive you.

Not true. Only those who repent, feel remorse, and regret past conduct.

Talk about a deterrence if people were convicted in the morning, sentenced in the afternoon, and executed at 12:01 AM, though.

For those who were sentenced to the death penalty, sure.

Your post didn't say that. It did, in fact, give the impression that you condone the killing of any and all in the prison population.

I knew that wasn't your intent; I was just yanking your chain.

That wasn't your intent...was it? lol!

I have a brother who is addicted to heroin. He's doing 25 years to life (third strike) for commercial burglery, theft, and passing stolen checks. He committed his crimes to support his habit. Do you think he deserve to be executed?

Well, the Knights of Columbus do. But, they don't have a cool secret handshake.

That younger priest was a problem, because at age 7, I knew a marxist revisionist when I saw one..

At age 7 you know what a marxist revisionist was?

Were your parents Birchers or something.

"But before we judge them, we should know what he did to provoke the attack. He might have made the mistake of forgetting where he was and tried to pull something like he did on innocent helpless children."

This priest pulled off three decades of molesting innocent young boys. Maybe, just maybe, one of his victims was confined in the same prison and sought revenge.

Well ---- that is up to the forum --- they can decide. I just think Catholics need to keep in mind the real reason people can make these comments ---- the bishops really did allow some horrible things to go on. I can't be an apologist for what happened, even if I still attend Mass.

How will a gangbanger with their customary indiscriminate aim feel about that 3 year old girl he killed while spraying at his "rival"?

You still haven't addressed my criticism of your plan to knock time off the sentences of those prisoners who murder other prisoners, or did you forget that you made that suggestion. My original post to you had nothing to do with the existential discussion of justice found. Try and stay on topic.

This man was a sick man who was a child molester and a homosexual the catholic church is to blame as well as anyone who endorses homosexuality as a viable lifestyle.

G-D is his judge now.

When he committed burglery and theft, was he armed? Would he have killed an innocent store owner if caught burglarizing a store? Some drug addicts will kill just to get their drug.

People who approve of Geoghan's murder on this thread are hypocritical cowards. Funny how none of these folks who are now saying that "he got what he deserved" were willing to kill the bastard themselves.

"It's good to see him dead, as long as the deed is done by some nameless, faceless sh!t in a state prison."

He desperately needed killing, and was cheated out of his "Cure" by Massachusetts' stand on putting down rabid dogs.

Right.
Society heaps scorn on convicts but  here you have one who had the sense of justice and the guts to do the right thing. To render justice where the Commonwealth of Massachusetts failed. Screw all the big shot judges and DA's on the case of John Geoghan.  A lowly convict rendered justice where they failed

I think this is an honest thread, whereas you view it as an ugly thread.

I don't pretend to speak for God nor to always understand Him. I try to accept what IS.

"Miracle" is not a word I associate with convicted pedophiles, particularly those pedophiles in priest's clothing, and this dead one is not the only pedophile priest. May God damn them all. How's that?

Not to nit-pic, but blaspheming the Holy Spirit is the one unforgivable sin.

One who does not trust the Spirit's grace to seek repentance obviously cannot be forgiven, since they do not seek it.

Anyone who seeks the mercy of God can be presumed to not have "blasphemed" the Spirit.

I'm glad you are not an apologist and I hope your church has success at cleaning itself up. I have been dismayed by the lack of calling homosexual predation what it is.

Like you, I'm not disturbed by the priest's fate but I would not call for wholesale slaughter in prison like some have here in their not terribly thought out glee.

Probably it would be better to put those drug users who rob and burglarize together in cells apart from the murderers and rapists. The murderers and rapists should be together.
