Pancakes on Wednesdays
Yes, we now have banana pancakes....

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Wednesday August 20, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

EDACIOUS

Relating to eating.

That, at least, is the literal sense of the word, since it comes from the Latin verb edere, to eat. But even in Latin it had a stronger sense of voracious consumption and that was carried with it into English. It was brought into the language—surprisingly recently—by classically educated writers at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It never really caught on and is now almost extinct, perhaps because voracious is a better established and more vigorous-sounding alternative. The Roman writer Ovid created a maxim in his Metamorphoses: “Tempus edax rerum.” time devours everything. As a result, in its rare appearances the word is most likely to be linked with time. Thomas Carlyle used it in this way when he referred to events “swallowed in the depths of edacious time.”

Good one Kathy.

Here's one to enjoy while you enjoy your pancakes....

At a lecture......

"The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. We put things in our mouths that our great grandparents wouldn't even put on their skin. Red meat has been proven to be awful. Most soft drinks erode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG, which is a preservative that causes lots of health problems Vegetables and fruits can be disastrous because of the chemicals sprayed on them as they are growing. And none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs and contaminates in our drinking water." "But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten it or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?" A 75-year-old man in the front row stood up and said, "Wedding cake."

I have to go and pick up my carpet, but I just heard on FNC that the Israeli government has declared an all out war against Hezbollah and Hamas. And the government will be cracking down on the Palestinians. Of course, the usual diplomatic idiots are warning Israel against doing it.

GO ISRAEL GO!!

Now, that's kind of cool.

I'm reading more and more stories like this, of kids/young adults doing "love-of-country/troops" things that their older sibs would retch over.

It almost makes this cranky old sergeant think twice on how less irredeemable today's youth might be...

...until I watch the news...

PLAYMOBIL.

The Missus and I have been collecting Playmobil since 1989. The Boy and I spend hours with our Medieval and Pirate collections. He makes his own stories, and then we act them out for The Missus and his Grandpaw. It's a blast.

The Boy's latest thing is, to re-enact the battles of The Lord Of the Rings. Catapults, battering rams, the swarms of archers - he does it all.

My kind of kid!

found on another website, just passing it on!

A French Poem

Eleven thousand soldiers
lay beneath the dirt and stone,
all buried on a distant land
so far away from home.

For just a strip of dismal beach
they paid a hero's price,
to save a foreign nation
they all made the sacrifice.

And now the shores of Normandy
are lined with blocks of white:
Americans who didn't turn
from someone else's plight.

Eleven thousand reasons
for the French to take our side,
but in the moment of our need,
they chose to run and hide.

Chirac said every war means loss,
perhaps for France that's true,
for they've lost every battle
since the days of Waterloo.

Without a soldier worth a damn
to be found within the region,
the French became the only land
to need a Foreign Legion.

You French all say we're arrogant.
Well hell, we've earned the right--
We saved your sorry nation
when you lacked the guts to fight.

But now you've made a big mistake,
and one that you'll regret;
you took sides with our enemies,
and that we won't forget.

It wasn't just our citizens
you spit on when you turned,
but every one of yours
who fell the day the towers burned.

You spit upon our soldiers,
on our pilots and Marines,
and now you'll get a little sense
of just what payback means.

So keep your Paris fashions
and your wine and your champagne,
and find some other market
that will buy your aeroplanes.

And try to find somebody else
to wear your French cologne,
for you're about to find out
what it means to stand alone.

You see, you need us far more
than we ever needed you.
America has better friends
who know how to be true.

I'd rather stand with warriors
who have the will and might,
than huddle in the dark
with those whose only flag is white.

I'll take the Brits, the Aussies,
the Israelis and the rest,
for when it comes to valor
we have seen that they're the best.

We'll count on one another
as we face a moment dire,
while you sit on the sideline
with a sign, "friendship for hire."

We'll win this war without you
and we'll total up the cost,
and take it from your foreign aid,
and then you'll feel the loss.

And when your nation starts to fall,
well Frenchie, you can spare us,
just call the Germans for a hand,
they know the way to Paris.

Don Fichthorn, Major USMC (Retired)

..."ALWAYS let me off for that"...

That's because it's so important! Your boss is a pretty good guy! (don't tell him - you'll risk his getting a big ego) Have a good one!
