Amusement Park Operator Killed in Wash.
LANGLEY, Wash. (AP) - An amusement park operator was killed Saturday when his hair got caught on a roller coaster car, pulling him up as high as 40 feet before he fell, back-first, onto a fence.
Doug McKay, 40, was spraying lubricant on the tracks of the Super Loop 2, a ride at the Island County Fair on Whidbey Island, when his long hair got caught on a car full of fairgoers, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Smith said.
``It basically scalped him, and he fell and landed on the fence,'' Smith said.
McKay, co-owner of Paradise Amusements, based in Post Falls, Idaho, was pulled between 25 and 40 feet into the air.
Paradise Amusements had set up rides at the Island County Fair, located about 30 miles northwest of Seattle, for the past three years, Smith said.
Smith said grief counselors were on hand but that the fair continued after the incident.
Ive known some good ones myself -since passed. But like anything else, it has its share of jackasses too
No, but working around machinery with long loose hair is not that bright. Your hair should either be cut short or secured in some way to prevent it from getting caught in the machine. Same thing with baggy or oversize clothing.
Lots of people are hurt and killed every year because they don't follow simple safety precautions. Sad. It is a horrible way to die. Of course, I cant think of any nice ways to die.
No it doesn't.
You must admit it may be hazardous to ones health though.
Inattention more likely.
Working around machinery requires your full attention at all times. Long hair, loose clothing and jewelry are liable to get caught into machinery.
I saw the results of a guy who wasn't paying attention while working with a pneumatic drill. His coveralls were caught in the machine and essentially applied a "tourniquet" to his arm.
A coworker shut the drill off and they cut away his coveralls to free him. His arm was black & blue for for months afterward.
Even the Geeks who bite heads off rats?
He will quit. I am sure of it. Tom is a good man. But he should move to a state where he can win.
Hey, I bite the heads off RATs all the time---some of them even pretend to be conservatives...LOL..
But seriously, the freak shows were a part of show business history, no doubt. Back when I was doing it, there were still some around. Not so much anymore. But you have to say, as strange as some of that stuff was, the marks ate it up.
The advent of TV really did it in. After all, some geek biting a rat's head off, or a fat lady, or a strong man, or Siamese twns, or whatever, can hardly compare to the freaks Hollyweird can line up on any given night of the week. And the girlie shows were pretty tame compared to what is available out there today in other places and in other formats.
By the way, I said that some of the best people I ever have known were carnies. But the converse is true; some of the worst people I've known were carnies as well. ;-)
I do have a few stories to tell.
Course, now I live in DC, and do politics. Talk about a freak show...
Oh I don't forget. And after the little incident we had on the floor where the lady got her pendent caught neither does anyone else.
Best safety demonstration we ever had. We should have given her a bonus.
Nothing like seeing someone almost go head first into a mixer to make you reconsider not following "the stupid rules".
I live in the Annapolis area and don't want to get any closer on a regular basis to D.C.
